Sussex Cricket Society: Lunch with David Gower

21 Dec 2023

The Sussex Cricket Society is opening its doors to new members once again and with such an exciting line up of guests planned in the New Year, now is the perfect time to join.

The Sussex Cricket Society was formed on 6 April 1965 by Alan Oakman, the former Sussex and England cricketer.

The aims of the Society are "to further cricket interest and enthusiasm and to provide a source of contact between cricket lovers”. To this end the Society holds 6 monthly meetings from October through to March.

The Society's winter programme continues on Wednesday 10th January when David Gower will be speaking at a lunch in Cow Corner at The 1st Central County Ground.

The tickets for this event cost only £34 for members including lunch, and details of how to sign up by the 3rd January will be sent to all new members when joining the Society.

Get in early as the event is already proving popular with existing members. Each member is welcome to bring one guest.

On February 14th it’s another lunch with a great speaker, this time Geoff Miller (Derbyshire, Essex and England).

In March or early April, when the date will depend on Sussex’s pre-season arrangements, an afternoon tea with Sussex Head Coach Paul Farbrace as speakerwill round off the winter’s entertainment.

Event details (prices, booking information) will appear in the monthly newsletter issued roughly six weeks before an event.

To gain access to these events you will need to be a member of Sussex Cricket Society which you can do by following the link to the Society Website at the bottom of this article and paying an annual membership from just £20.

You will from then on automatically also receive the informative newsletter which is sent out to all our members each month.

The events themselves do vary in price depending on catering costs and all will take place at The 1st Central County Ground in Hove. As you can see and with over 200 members, the Society is looking forward to the New Year.

If not already a member we hope you too will enjoy and support the great work the Sussex Cricket Society does by joining here: https://www.sussexcricketsociety.org/

Alfie Pyle returns to Super 1s

20 Dec 2023

Sussex D40 batter Alfie Pyle recently made history when he became the first player to go from a Super 1s programme, through the County system and all the way up to the top of the game, making his international debut for England in a victorious tri-series in South Africa last month.

Fresh from making his England debut, Alfie was straight back into coaching a Super 1s session in Crawley, right where it all began for him.

Many would have forgiven him for taking a rest after such a special and busy year, however Alfie was back doing what he loves, inspiring the next generation to pick up a bat and ball.

Hear from Alfie about his whirlwind journey, from Super 1s to Sussex and England.

What is Super 1s?

The Sussex Cricket Foundation's Super 1s clubs provide access for young people with additional needs to regular cricket.

They give participants the chance to compete against peers as well as opportunities to build friendships and develop independent life skills.

With the support of leading disability sports charity, Lord’s Taverners, we run clubs in several Sussex locations throughout the calendar year.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice signs contract extension

19 Dec 2023

Sussex Cricket is delighted to announce that all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice has signed a two-year contract extension with the Club.

The new deal will see the 27-year-old remain at The 1st Central County Ground until at least 2026.

Born in Haywards Heath, Hudson-Prentice came through the Sussex Pathway and made his debut for the first team in August 2015 at the age of 19.

After a brief spell away from the club, which saw him first represent the MCC Young Cricketers, followed two seasons at Derbyshire, Fynn returned home to his boyhood county in 2021.

Although his return was hampered by injuries in 2021 and 2022, Fynn has gone on to establish himself as a vital component in Farbrace’s team.

In the County Championship in 2023, Fynn accumulated 879 runs, making 9 half-centuries and averaging 48.83.

He also contributed vital wickets with the red ball, taking 20 wickets helping Sussex to a third-place finish in Division 2.

His efforts last season were recognised by the coaching team and members, when not only was he awarded Men’s Championship Player of the Year, but he was also given his County Cap.

Speaking on the new deal, Fynn said: “I am delighted to have signed an extension with my boyhood club. I’m really enjoying working with Paul Farbrace and I am excited for what the future holds with the group of players we have here.”

Sussex Head Coach, Paul Farbrace added: “We are delighted Fynn has committed his next three seasons to the club, he epitomises everything we are trying to create on and off the field.

"He is one of the most dedicated players I have had the pleasure of working with. He works extremely hard to give himself the best chance of success on the field.

"Fynn had an excellent all round season this year, and we all look forward to his continued development as a player. He is a genuine three in one player, and is continually looking to improve his skills."

Sixes Cricket’s Christmas Truck to visit Hove on Monday!

15 Dec 2023

Sussex Cricket Foundation’s partnership with Sixes Social Cricket has also seen £1,000 raised for the Foundation.

The Sussex Cricket Foundation is delighted to announce that their partnership with Sixes Social Cricket has raised £1,000 to support the work it does within the County.

The Foundation and Sixes partnered together in July and customers of the Sixes Social Cricket venue on Brighton Seafront have the option make a £1 voluntary donation on top of their bill to the Sussex Cricket Foundation, with the money contributing to helping the SCF grow the game and make it accessible to all across Sussex.

In recent times, our very own Jack Carson visited the venue to deliver a cricket masterclass to Brighton & Hove Albion footballers Jason Steele and Solly March.

Along with raising vital funds for the Foundation the partnership has the aim of working together to deliver even more cricketing opportunities and experiences for people within the County in a social setting.

This month, Sixes are touring various locations over the Christmas period with their mobile ‘Christmas Truck’ and we can confirm that the truck will be at The 1st Central County Ground on Monday 18th December between 11am & 5pm.

Anyone can visit the ground and try out the Sixes activity FREE of charge!

As part of the partnership with Sixes, discount codes are available on request for members, affiliated clubs and schools in Sussex. Please contact foundation@sussexcricket.co.uk for further details.

Gary Wallis-Tayler, Community Cricket Director, said: “We are extremely grateful for the support provided by Sixes and the donation provided by customers who have visited their site over the last few months.

“The money raised will go towards continuing growing the game and making it accessible for all across Sussex. We are looking forward to developing our partnership with Sixes further during the course of the 2024.”

Michael Hay from Sixes Cricket added: “The collaboration with Sussex Cricket Foundation has been immensely rewarding. We're thrilled to have raised £1,000 for the Foundation, enabling us to contribute to the growth and accessibility of cricket across Sussex.

“Furthermore, as part of the festive season, Sixes Cricket is excited to extend the joy through its mobile 'Christmas Truck' tour. We're enthusiastic about spreading holiday cheer in Hove and beyond and can’t wait to welcome the local community on Monday 18th December at The 1st Central County Ground”

Cheteshwar Pujara and Daniel Hughes sign

13 Dec 2023

Sussex Cricket is delighted to announce the re-signing of India Test batter, Cheteshwar Pujara and Australian batter, Daniel Hughes as overseas signings for the 2024 season.

Fan favourite Cheteshwar Pujara will return to The 1st Central County Ground for a third season running and will be available for the first seven County Championship games.

Thereafter, Daniel Hughes will be available from the start of the T20 Vitality Blast until the end of the season. He will play in the County Championship, as well as the Blast.

However, Sussex Head Coach, Paul Farbrace has opted not to use overseas players in this year’s Metro Bank One Day Cup.

The two batters will complement the two overseas bowlers, Jayden Seales and Nathan McAndrew who have also signed for the Club for the 2024 campaign.

Pujara returns

The man that needs no introduction at Hove is back once again. In his 18 County Championship appearances for Sussex, Pujara has accumulated an astonishing 1863 runs at average of 64.24, including eight centuries and three half-centuries.

His highest score for Sussex came against Derbyshire in 2022 when he made 231, when he shared a stand of 351 with Tom Haines, who also chalked up a double century.

In 2023, his highest score of 151 came against Gloucestershire, a knock that included 20 fours and two sixes.

Speaking on his delight at returning to Sussex, Pujara said: "I have enjoyed my time at Hove the last couple of seasons and couldn’t be more delighted to be back again with the Sussex family.

"I am looking forward to joining the team and contributing to its success."

On bringing Puj back again, Sussex Head Coach, Paul Farbrace, said: “I am delighted that Cheteshwar is returning to Hove again for the first two months of the season.

“He is not just a high-quality player but is also a high-quality person. His experience and calmness in matches is a fantastic asset for our team.”

Hughes brings runs at the top of the order

An aggressive top-order batsman, Daniel Hughes forced his way into his current New South Wales Blues side on sheer weight of runs.

In first-class cricket, Hughes averages 36.90 with a best knock of 178. In his 137 innings, Hughes has gone on to 26 half-centuries and eight centuries.

Hughes claimed his second Steve Waugh Medal in 2019-20 after receiving his first in 2017-18. The Blues and Sydney Sixers opener also claimed the NSW Blues Marsh One-Day Cup Player of the Season award.

In T20 cricket Hughes has accumulated 2204 runs in 93 innings at a strike rate of 120.89 and has been part of the Sydney Sixers team that won back-to-back Big Bash League titles in 2020 and 2021.

Speaking on joining fellow Australian, Nathan McAndrew at Sussex, Hughes said: “Playing county cricket has been a long-held ambition for me. I am delighted to get that opportunity at Sussex.

“I respect the strong traditions of the Club. The plans that exist for team are exciting and I look forward to getting to Hove and helping Sussex with success along the way”.

Commenting on the acquisition of Hughes, Paul Farbrace said: “We are all very pleased to welcome Dan to Hove, he is a top-class player and has vast amounts of experience.

“We are all very much looking forward to working him and enjoying how he helps our team on and off the field.”

Sussex players visit Chestnut Tree House

12 Dec 2023

Last week, Sussex stars Tom Alsop, Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Ari Karvelas paid a special visit to local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House, where they played football, games and participated in arts & crafts with children and the amazing staff who provide specialist care at the facility in West Sussex.

The Chestnut Tree House is a children’s charity that provides hospice care services and community support for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions across Sussex and South East Hampshire.

As well as care provided at the House, nurses visit families at home, taking children out to explore their local community, or simply giving tired families and carers the chance to take a well-earned break.

Alsop, Hudson-Prentice and Karvelas spent the morning meeting children, their families and their carers and were given a special tour of the facilities, whilst also listening to some of the stories of those who receive care.

Speaking on the visit, Fynn Hudson-Prentice said: “It was good to get to spend our morning at Chestnut Tree House and see the incredible facility they have, as well as spending some time with a few of the children and meeting some of the staff.

“Elaine showed us around and we got a real feel for the caring, warm and friendly atmosphere at the hospice.”

On behalf of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, the players also presented some of the children who are fans of the Club with goody bags full of toys and presents.

Elaine Ford, Activities Coordinator from the Chestnut Tree House added: “The guys were phenomenal with the children and young people, playing sports, chatting with families and putting smiles on everyone’s faces. They are welcome back any time.”
