Sussex trio, Wyatt, Davies and Smith lead England to series whitewash

28 Mar 2019

England completed a 3-0 series whitewash over Sri Lanka this morning, with Sussex stars Danni Wyatt, Freya Davies and Linsey Smith leading their side to a 96-run win in Colombo.

The victory, which was England's tenth in a row, was the most commanding performance of a series the tourists have dominated, and highlighted just how good Heather Knight's side are with and without the ball.

After Sri Lanka won the toss, England batted first with openers Wyatt and Amy Jones looking impressive at the crease. The pair both made half-centuries, with Wyatt's fifty including six fours and one six and coming off 32 balls.

Jones and Wyatt put on a 96-run opening stand before the partnership with eventually broken, with Wyatt out for 51 and then Jones dismissed 20 runs later for 57 off 38 balls.

With a solid platform to build on, Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver then went on the offensive to score 88 off the last seven overs, and help England finish on 204-2 off their 20 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka struggled against England's formidable bowling attack, with Davies and Smith taking a wicket each and only three Sri Lankans getting into double figures.

On just her third appearance for England, Davies was by far the side's most economical bowler, taking 1-12 off her four overs with captain Chamari Atapattu her victim. Linsey Smith has also settled into life with the national side superbly, and struck with her first ball to remove Umesha Thimashini, lbw for 1.

Kate Cross, playing her first match of the T20 leg, also took two wickets, either side of breakthroughs from Knight and Laura Marsh, and despite some late resistance from Hansima Karunaratne, who finished 44 not out, the hosts fell well short of their target, finishing 108-6.
