Sussex’s Georgia Elwiss and Danni Wyatt played major parts in a thrilling victory for England Women in the third and final one-day international against India in Mumbai on Thursday.
Chasing 206 for victory, England had slipped to 49-5 in the 15th over, but 56 for Wyatt at number seven and an unbeaten 33 for Elwiss at number eight steered the tourists towards victory.
On her way to a maiden one-day international half- century, Wyatt combined with her captain Heather Knight to put on 70 for the sixth-wicket.
When Knight was caught behind for 47, that brought Elwiss to the crease who added 56 with her Sussex teammate to take England within 32 of victory.
A 30-run eighth wicket partnership between Elwiss and Katherine Brunt left England needing two runs before new batter Anya Shrubsole hit her first ball for four to give England a three-wicket victory.
The win made sure England avoided a whitewash in the series, which finished 2-1.
Earlier, Elwiss had impressed with the ball, conceding just 29 runs from her ten overs and taking a catch off her own bowling to dismiss Shikha Pandey.
Wyatt bowled three overs for 15 runs and took the catch that dismissed India’s top-scorer Smriti Mandhana, while the third Sussex player involved in the match, Sarah Taylor, took two catches at the wicket as the home side made 205-8 from their 50 overs.
