Sussex vs Hampshire

7 Sep 2025

Sussex's penultimate home game of the season sees a fourth and final clash with South Coast rivals Hampshire in the 2025 season.

Just three games remain in this year's Rothesay County Championship and Sussex's main aim will be to maintain their Division One status for 2026. They are currently 6th in the Division One table, but just 15 points separate the teams in 5th and 9th.

With the Dukes ball back in hand in September, Sussex will look to put their July disappointments behind them and finish on a high.

Team News

Paul Farbrace has named a 14-player squad for the visit of Hampshire. Sean Hunt makes his first appearance in a Championship squad since April following his injury, while Ollie Robinson returns after missing the last three matches. Jaydev Unadkat has linked back up with the squad as the second overseas player for September, after two successful stints in 2023 and 2024.

Alsop, Carson, Carter, Coles, Crocombe, Haines, Hudson-Prentice, Hughes, Hunt, Ibrahim, Karvelas, Robinson, Simpson* (wk), Unadkat

The Opposition

Hampshire sit one place ahead of Sussex in 5th, with just two points separating the sides. Since Sussex's victory over Hampshire in the reverse fixture at Utilita Bowl in May, tomorrow's visitors went on to draw all four of their matches with the Kookaburra ball in June and July.

Kyle Abbott, as ever, has been a consistent wicket taker for Hampshire this season. His 42 wickets (@ 21.52) are the second most of any bowler in the competition this season.

Timings

Gates will open tomorrow at 9.30am, with the toss taking place half an hour later at 10am. The first ball will be bowled at 10.30am.

Vote for Your Sparking Moments of the Year

Vote for Your Sparking Moments of the Year

Now is your chance to vote for your Sussex Sparkling Moments of the Year for both the Men's and Women's teams in 2025. We've got three to pick from for both teams.

Cast your mind back to these six moments from the season and decide which of those stood out to you and had the biggest impact on the team's performance that game.

Men's Sparkling Moment Nominees

Sean Hunt Hits the Winning Runs vs Lancashire - Metro Bank One Day Cup

After tearing through the Somerset batting order during the first home County Championship game of the season, Sean Hunt would suffer a freak shoulder injury that meant he had to sit on the sidelines for three months, but when he returned, he did it in style.

His return to the side came in Metro Bank One Day Cup action against Lancashire in what was the first day-night fixture at Hove for a number of years, and Hunt did not disappoint, but it wasn't his exploits with the ball for which he is nominated.

A nail-biting chase under the lights came to a tense crescendo, with the Sharks requiring just one run to win, with three balls and one wicket remaining. Enter Sean Hunt, taking a giant stride down the pitch and smashing a four back over the head of the Lancs bowler to give Sussex a memorable victory in spectacular fashion.

Danny Lamb Guides the Sharks Home vs Gloucestershire - T20 Vitality Blast

Chasing a victory target of 186, Sharks required 15 runs off the final over, bowled by David Payne. Lamb clubbed three boundaries, including one off the final ball, to stun a large Festival audience into silence and end Gloucestershire's defence of the title they lifted last year.

Danny Lamb held his nerve to hit 16 runs off five balls and carry Sussex Sharks to a dramatic last-ball four-wicket win over Gloucestershire in a thrilling Vitality Blast encounter on the opening day of the Towergate Cheltenham Festival.

Nathan McAndrew Rips Through Glamorgan -T20 Vitality Blast

Nathan McAndrew loves to bowl against Glamorgan. The Australian overseas seam bowler helped the Sussex Sharks complete two wins over Glamorgan within the space of just six days, taking 11 wickets along the way.

It was the second of those two outstanding performances with the ball for which he is nominated.

Nathan McAndrew backed up Sussex’s first innings for an all-round winning display returning 6 for 21 despite Dan Douthwaite’s quickfire 40 from three wickets inside six balls and Colin Ingram’s 21-ball 37 kept Glamorgan in the chase before they fell to 172 all out.

Three of those wickets came in the penultimate over to give Nathan career-best T20 bowling figures for a man that continues to make an impact on this Sussex side, year after year.

Women's Sparkling Moment Nominees

Rachel King Half Century vs Kent Spitfire - T20 Vitality Blast

A batter with pedigree and the ability to take her game to the top of her profession, and also the personality and mentality to match her talents.

Rachel King's 50 from just 28 balls included 9 fours and 1 six, the perfect platform built for a memorable maiden win in the competition for the Sussex Sharks Women.

Mollie Adams Makes a Sensational Century vs Worcestershire Rapids - Metro Bank One Day Cup

Mollie Adams certainly comes from fine cricketing stock and the surname is one which carries weight around this County, but Mollie has shown she is up for the challenge.

Opening the batting and keeping is no mean feat for any cricketer at any level but Mollie Adams has taken it in her stride in 2025.

She made 104 runs from just 146 balls, including 14 fours to give the Sharks Women their first win of the season.

Anna Buckle 5fer vs Worcestershire Rapids - Metro Bank One Day Cup

A mainstay in the Sussex Sharks team all season, all of Anna Buckle's bowling skills were on display in the same match that saw Adams make 104 from 146.

The perfect display of swing bowling led to Buckle tearing through a Worcestershire Rapids side who may have fancied their chances against a Sussex side looking for their first win of the season.

She returned figures of 5-27 from just 6.4 overs, including the match-sealing final wicket, clean bowling Jess Beach to secure a 29-run victory at New Road.

Nantes Oosthuizen Signs Rookie Contract Extension

Sussex Cricket is pleased to announce that seam-bowler Nantes Oosthuizen has signed a one-year Rookie contract extension.

After developing his game at Seaford College with Chris Adams, Oosthuizen signed his first Rookie contract for the Club in March 2025, before plying his trade in the Sussex 2nd XI.

He's already taken 9 wickets across all formats for the team, including when he took 3-31 from 6 overs this weekend against the Essex 2nd XI.

Speaking on his new deal, Nantes, said: "I am very grateful for the opportunity to extend my time here at Sussex and can't wait to keep learning and developing with everyone involved at the Club."

Sussex Director of Cricket, Paul Farbrace, added: “Nantes is developing nicely as a very promising seam bowler, he came highly recommended from Chris Adams, who had worked with Nantes at Seaford College, and you can see the grounding work that Chris and Seaford have put into Nantes has given him a big advantage.

"We are delighted with his progress this summer, having finished his education at Seaford first.

"I am really looking forward to seeing Nantes continue to develop his game and really make great progress, he certainly gives his all every day.

Vote for Sussex's End of Season Awards

3 Sep 2025

The time has come for you to cast your vote ahead of this year's End of Season Awards, which features players from both Sussex Men and Sussex Women.

The nominations for the Men's Team (red ball):

James Coles

He's 21, obscenely gifted, and has a sparkling career ahead of him. A fine half-century at Edgbaston in his first innings of the season set the tone, and 890 runs and a further few bat raises later, he's the fifth-highest run scorer in Division One this season. But it's his consistency that has been all the more impressive: an average just shy of 50 combines with three centuries. And there's still three games to play...

John Simpson

Of all the great captains to play for Sussex, John Simpson's name must be in the conversation. An exemplary wicket-keeper batter who leads the team with brilliance and decorum, Simpson is Sussex's second-highest run scorer in the County Championship with an average of 58.06. His 354-minute stint out in the middle in the opening day of the season was utterly brilliant, and behind the stumps he holds the second-most dismissals in Division One with 44. A class act all round.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice

Hark back to that April afternoon when Hudson-Prentice promptly took four wickets – including two with his first two deliveries - to leave Somerset reeling at 62-5 at the close. It was an excellent spell, but the all-rounder has shone with the ball in hand for the entirety of the season. Finding that line and length with utmost consistency, he's taken the second-highest number of wickets for the club in Division One and has absolutely earned the right to be there. A smattering of half-centuries, too, makes the 29-year-old a genuine all-rounder.

And the nominations for Men's Team (white ball):

James Coles

Transferring his form over to the shorter format, Coles was the Sharks' leading run scorer in Vitality Blast this year, blitzing 397 runs at a strike rate of 158.80. It all commenced on the opening night: smashing a career-best unbeaten 77 from 44 balls to set up a winning start to the Blast at Lord's. Explosive with the bat, effective with the ball; this year's T20 Blast campaign for Coles was exceptionally good.

Tom Clark

Despite impressing once again during the Blast, it was the One Day Cup where Clark delivered his best cricket. The Sharks' leading run scorer in the competition, bolstered by his brilliant 139 against Lancashire at Hove, the 24-year-old capped the competition with a quickfire 82 at Edgbaston. Another successful year.

Nathan McAndrew

Well, he showed up. The overseas star's 23 wickets in Vitality Blast came at an average of just 16.60, and featured a destructive spell at Sophia Gardens where the fast-bowler collected career-best figures of 6/21. He certainly flexed his muscles with the bat, too. McAndrew's third spell at the club was arguably his most fruitful.

The nominations for the Women's Team (T20 Blast):

Rachel King

It didn't take long for Rachel King to hit the ground running in Sussex colours. In the Vitality Blast alone, King blasted 201 runs off the bat at an average of 67, placing her 7th for most runs scored amongst all batters in the division. Her consistency at the crease was impressive, and that strike-rate of over 150 spotlighted her power and precision.

Chiara Green

Leading the team and leading the wicket column, captain Chiara's eight wickets at an average of 19.25 placed her with some of the very best bowlers in the competition. It wasn't just her ability to take wickets, though, for her economy rate of just 5.31 shows how parsimonious a spinner she is. The skipper would go on to claim best-figures of 2-11 against Kent, encapsulating her full capabilities on the pitch.

Izzy Collis

While Collis may not have been able to raise the bat in the format this year, a collection of fine innings and divine ball striking still placed the opening batter in the top 15 of highest run scorers in the competition. A high score of 30, her 154 runs in total demonstrate the impressive consistency Collis displayed with the willow in grasp, and she can be proud of getting the Sharks off to a multitude of fast starts in the Blast.

The nominations for the Women's Team (One Day Cup):

Anna Buckle

In a league teeming with bowling talent, Anna Buckle's performances with the ball in hand were up there with the very best. Metronomically accurate, her often destructive spells placed her in the top five for bowlers in One Day Cup League Two. It's been a breakout year in truth, and a really, really positive one, too.

Mollie Adams

The daughter of Sussex legend Chris and sister to Georgia, Mollie has been a sensation at Sussex this year. 270 runs to her name is an impressive feat, but a century at Worcestershire and an average around the 50-mark show just how exciting a talent the young wicket-keeper batter truly is.

Chiara Green

Nine wickets, 166 runs and a fantastic leader. The captain has led by example this year in all competitions which, provided that the foundations for this Sussex side are still being laid, shows just how far they have come in a short space of time.

Statistics are correct at time of publication.

Match Report

Derbyshire Women vs Sharks

30 Aug 2025

First came a burst of wickets, then a blistering showing with the bat, before the rains dropped the curtain on the match and the season as Alexia Walker’s Sharks rounded off this new venture – a season brimming with positives - with a sparkling showing in the Midlands.

Derbyshire’s patience and perseverance out in the middle of this grey, blustery day had them seemingly striking towards a reputable total, even despite falling to 11-2 early on. But through the haze Lara Shaw would record a fine half-century to provide the defibrillation, before the wickets fell and the Sharks’ chase would stand at 187.

The loss of two early wickets proved to be no distraction for Daisy Mullan and Nancy Harman who, with the squeeze on, slipped from the net and batted at their brilliant best. A partnership that would ultimately win this contest as the runs crept inexorably closer to the target before the heavens opened and prevented any further play. Some time later, hands were shaken and Sussex are winners. A fitting end to the campaign.

With this being the final chapter of 2025 and both sides missing out on the chance of qualification, the shackles were off somewhat here. There may not have been much riding on this but that didn’t prevent a performance of heart and merit. Mollie Adams and Lottie Curling returned to the side and wickets fell early on this Derbyshire morning. With her very first ball Talitha Stanley located the stumps of Jessica Couser. From there, a platform, a precedence, and a passage to perfection.

There were times throughout the 44 and a bit overs where Derbyshire looked a side capable with the bat. They did not look a side winless throughout the competition, even without firing on all cylinders. Megan Pittman starred in a wobbly middle order after Megan Shaw had laid the foundations at the top. The third highest score was extras (and at 37 it’s something to work on ahead of next season). Minus the aforementioned two, Derbyshire’s batting lacked any sort of stability or rhythm.

There were three ducks, and four other batters would fail in their quest to achieve double figures. But the bowling was superb, and Chiara Green captained this game superbly. The bowling attack - which consisted of six Sharks – all took wickets barring Anna Lewis, who still posed a threat throughout. Curling and Indigo Gentry were the standouts here, but the spin options of Ava Lee and Green provided the catalyst for a calamitous middle order that saw Derbyshire wilt from 128-4 to 138-8 in a matter of overs. And with it, and reachable target was set: 187 to win.

Izzy Collis has been one of the most consistent batters in this Sharks lineup this season. Here, she edged behind to a wide, tempting Rhiannon Knowling-Davies delivery that on another day would have careered to the boundary. It found the edge, and Sussex were 1-1. Mollie Adams in, looking assured for six balls before Francesca Clarke angled the ball in towards her stumps. It was full, swirling and quick. Adams’ bat narrowly evading the ball, and Derbyshire had developed some swift pressure.

At 22 years of age Mullan is a very strong striker at the crease. Aggressive with the bat, looking to score runs quickly, flipping the switch. She arrived at the crease with her side in need of something good. That was present pretty much in the innings' entirety, but so, too, was the power; the precision. Her timing of the ball was magnificent, finding the gaps and tiring the bowlers.

The pick of the shots? That arrived with Mullan’s first boundary of the afternoon: a textbook cover drive and a hold of the pose just for good measure. With Harman at the opposite end, the pair piled on the runs. With one eye on the darkening clouds the run rate jumped up to five, and stayed around there for the duration. The Sharks reached the 100-mark in the 21st over, and hastily the finish line came into view.

The rains would deluge the course 37 runs short of the target, though the Sharks would prevail in the wet weather on the Duckworth-Lewis method. Daisy Mullan finished 82 not out, Harman also unperturbed on 53. One of the largest partnerships of the year saved for last. 129 runs they put on together – a fabulous feat that looked every bit assured.

Victory, then, for this group who, back in Spring had hardly played cricket with one another. Fast forward in time and they look a side matured and measured. Sure, there are things to improve on, hurdles to be jumped, but as the they travel back down south to Sussex this evening, they can feel pride for what has been a season of unbridled success, and the start of something truly wonderful.

Derbyshire Women vs Sharks

29 Aug 2025

Alexia Walker's Sharks head to The County Ground in Derby on Saturday to conclude not only their One Day Cup campaign, but their season as a whole.

And, on reflection, it's been an impressive year for this young squad that will only improve. The Sharks head up to Derbyshire looking to end 2025 on an even greater high.

Tom Clark and Archie Lenham high five after Lenham takes a wicket.
Match Report

Warwickshire vs Sussex Sharks

26 Aug 2025

Archie Lenham took five wickets as Warwickshire suffered Metro Bank One-Day Cup heartbreak after a 21-run (D/L) home defeat to Sussex caused qualification to slip through their fingers.

In a match reduced to 48 overs per side, Sussex totalled 277 for nine with only Tom Clark (82 from 77 balls) building an innings beyond the cameo stage. Olly Hannon-Dalby’s three for 53 was well-supported by the spinners who shared five wickets.

Warwickshire’s D/L target was adjusted to 280 from 48 overs and they were bowled out for 258 in 45.1 overs. Ed Barnard struck 82 (75) and Alex Davies (74, 90) but Archie Lenham took his maiden List A five-for - five for 48 – as the middle and lower order imploded.

That left Warwickshire’s players clinging to the hope of Middlesex losing to Lancashire – but half an hour later those hopes were extinguished as Middlesex snuck home by one wicket at Old Trafford.

Sussex chose to bat and soon lost Henry Rogers, caught by a diving Hamza Shaikh at extra cover off Hannon-Dalby, but Clark sped to a 45-ball half-century. After a short rain break, Daniel Ibrahim tickled a potential leg side wide from Rob Yates to wicketkeeper Kai Smith.

The fluent Clark was 18 short of emulating his championship century at Edgbaston in April when he lifted Tazeem Ali to deep mid-wicket. Batters throughout the tournament have learned that you attack the young leg-spinner at your peril – Tom Alsop joined the list when his top-edged slog landed in the hands of mid on.

John Simpson fell lbw, sweeping at Jake Lintott and as the innings stalled against the spinners, it needed late impetus. Danny Lamb provided some with a run-a-ball 42 before reverse-sweeping Lintott to deep point. Bertie Foreman (30, 33) lifted the total over 250 but, on a good batting pitch, Sussex appeared around 27 under par.

Warwickshire quickly lost Yates, who sliced a wide Sean Hunt half-volley to point. Zen Malik assured a brisk start with 27 from 25 balls but then hoisted Clark to long leg.

Barnard and Davies shifted the game their side’s way with a stand of 107 in 99 balls. Barnard was imperious, deploying sparkling footwork to the spinners, but his departure, caught at extra cover off Troy Henry, triggered a collapse.

Although out of the qualification picture, Sussex back fought back with great heart. Foreman ousted Shaikh, who reverse-swept to short third, and Lenham removed Davies, caught at extra, and Vansh Jani, bowled cutting, with successive balls.

Lintott swept Lenham to deep mid-wicket, Kai Smith played on and when Adam Sylvester edged to slip, Lenham had his five for. When Hannon-Dalby swung and missed at Henry Crocombe, the Bears were left hoping for a Middlesex defeat. They hoped in vain.
