Sussex’s overseas player for the 2021 season, Travis Head, greeted the return of Australia’s first-class competition, the Sheffield Shield, with a sensational innings on day one of South Australia’s match against Western Australia at the WACA in Perth.
The South Australian skipper reached the close unbeaten on 189, amassed from just 204 balls and including 25 fours and a six. Batting at number four, the left-hander added 186 for the third wicket with opener Henry Hunt and a further 82 for the fourth with former Sussex overseas player Alex Carey. South Australia will start day two on 368 for 4.
It is expected that Travis will join Sussex after the conclusion of an Australian domestic season extended as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Sheffield Shield regular season is due to finish on Wednesday 7th April, with the final between the top two sides taking place between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th April. Having completed four matches and with four rounds to come – including the one currently in progress – South Australia are bottom of the six-team table.
South Australia’s final regular season match in the one-day competition - the Marsh Cup – is scheduled for Wednesday 7th April with the final set for Sunday 11th April. Coach Jason Gillespie’s men open their four-match campaign against Western Australia next Tuesday 2nd March.
