Last year George Garton caught the attention of the England selectors and made his T20I debut for his country in Barbados against the West Indies, this year, Garton has his eye on domestic gold with the Sharks and hopes more international cricket will follow.
With many international stars in the Sharks’ squad this year, many people in and around the club are hopefully of T20 success, including newly appointed vice-captain George Garton.
“We only need to win one more game than we did last year to make it to the final,” the fast bowler explains. “I definitely think we have the calibre of player to go further this year, we managed to get to the semi-final last year and unfortunately just missed out, but we have a lot of depth and skill within the squad to make it further this time around.”
The Sharks will be led by legendary all-round Ravi Bopara this year, and Garton believes he can learn a lot from the experienced former England international.
“Ravi has played all around the world and has played for England so many times so that can only be beneficial not only for the team, but also myself as an individual. I am looking forward to learning from him and getting to know him as we play together more.
“Wrighty will of course still be around, he has always been somebody the younger players can go to for advice on or off the field.
“Luke is arguably our best batter every year, and his record speaks for itself. I think he averaged 45 at 150 last season and if he can do that again this year we will be in a good place. With Rizwan opening the batting alongside Wrighty, it’s an extremely exciting prospect for the team”
Looking to the future, Garton would certainly be open to taking the captaincy himself, seeing his role as vice-captain as the perfect education should he be called upon in years to come.
“I wouldn’t have taken the vice-captaincy role if I didn’t see that as a potential opportunity in the future, but my focus for now is just to help Ravi and the team out where I can.”
