Tom Alsop scored an excellent 88 on debut as Sussex made 357-4 before declaring on day 1 of the last pre-season friendly against Durham UCCE.
The batter-keeper who recently signed on a season-long loan deal from Hampshire, looked confident at the crease scoring 14 fours and one six to help take Sussex over the 300 mark after tea. This came after captain Tom Haines followed up on his impressive 129* against Surrey with another knock of 81 off 124 balls to get Sussex on their way in the first innings.
Haines and fellow opener Ali Orr put early pressure on the Durham UCCE bowling attack, comfortably putting together a first wicket partnership of 162 runs. The Sussex duo played fluently at the top of the order; however both were dismissed after being caught and bowled just after lunch, with Orr reaching 67.
Tom Clark came in and added a half-century of his own scoring an impressive 78 off 141 balls.
After declaring there was still time for the Sussex bowling attack to get 8 overs under their belt. Steve Finn immediately showed why he has had such a successful career at the highest level, opening the bowling with a wicket-maiden, dismissing Durham captain Sam Perry with just his fifth ball. Durham UCCE will resume play tomorrow on 25-1.
The team will be delighted with their performance on day 1, as they continue to build up towards the LV= Insurance County Championship opener next week.
