On Saturday 16th July Sussex VI made the long trip to face Yorkshire (Division 2) in the quarter final of the David Townley Memorial T20 cup.
Sussex won the toss and inserted their opponents to bat. After conceding 8 runs in the first over, the scoring rate decreased significantly with some very tight bowling from the VI Sharks.
First change bowler Dave Daniels bowled a brilliant 4-over spell taking 2 wickets for just 8 runs. This seemed to take the fight out of Yorkshire as wickets continued to fall regularly.
After 16 overs they reached 74 for 5 and needed a big push to post a competitive total. However, the Sussex opening bowlers returned to concede only 3 runs from the final 4 overs including a spectacular catch from Mark Oliphant to complete a wicket maiden in the final over.
Chasing just 77, Sussex got off to a slow start, with Dave Daniels run out without facing off the 3rd ball and Joe Harrison holing out for a golden duck in the 1st over.
This was followed by a maiden over leaving Sussex well behind the required rate on 6.2. Callum Weir (20) then steadied the ship along with Phil Daniels (10 not-out) before a rapid 41 not out from Dan Field saw the VI Sharks home. Dan hit an enormous 6 to close the match out in just 6.1overs.
Sussex secured their place at Finals Day, which will be played at Wolverhampton CC on Saturday 20th September.
The focus now switches to the 30 over cup competition next Saturday at 1pm when Sussex host Lancashire at Blackstone. All spectators are welcome to come along and cheer the team on.
