Ansty Cricket Club was the beautiful setting for Sussex’s second D40 Quest League fixture season against Wales on Sunday. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a good strip.
Following a disappointing first defeat, Sussex were not only focussed on getting a win, but also putting in a good performance. From the first ball it was clear the Sussex fielders were highly motivated.
The opening bowlers Alfie Pyle and Dan Gee both bowled well and were rewarded with 2 wickets apiece leaving Wales at 36 for 4 after 10 overs. The change bowlers kept up the pressure claiming two more wickets leaving Wales on 71 for 6 at the 20-over break.
Any hopes of a recovery after drinks were immediately dashed by a sensational over from Josh Dixon who took 3 wickets in four balls to leave Wales all out for 72.
Returning skipper, James Bunday, marshalled his troops brilliantly in the field, despite sustaining an injury while bowling his first over. Josh Dixon led the team off to well-deserved applause from the spectators for an outstanding team effort.
Sussex set about their chase with purpose and controlled batting. Wales set a very attacking field and both openers knew any slip up was likely to be punished.
Sussex moved steadily to 29 before the loss of their first wicket in the fourth over. However, some very attacking batting from Alfie Pyle saw Sussex reach their target with more than 30 overs to spare, only losing the second opener having to injury.
The next D40 Quest fixture is a very special occasion as this will be the first time the Sussex D40 squad play at the 1st Central County Ground.
The reigning champions, Surrey are the visitors for what should be a very exciting day. Entry is free for all spectators to come and celebrate this ground-breaking milestone for disability cricket in Sussex.
Finally, thanks must go to Webtrends Optimize and Ansty CC for their amazing support for the D40 Squad.
