After last week’s heroics from captain Tom Haines and debutant Cheteshwar Pujara, Head Coach Ian Salisbury is hopeful that his side can build some momentum as we face Worcestershire in our third game in the LV= Insurance County Championship.
Haines and Pujara put on a phenomenal third wicket stand of 351 in 119 overs to ensure Sussex claimed a draw and left Derbyshire with 8 points in the bag.
Salisbury has named a 13-man squad ahead of the trip to New Road:
Tom Alsop | 45
Jamie Atkins | 32
George Burrows | 31
Oli Carter | 11
Tom Clark | 27
Henry Crocombe | 5
Tom Haines* | 20
Archie Lenham | 41
Ali Orr | 6
Cheteshwar Pujara | 8
Delray Rawlins | 9
Mohammad Rizwan | 116
Grant Stewart | 99
Injury news
Ollie Robinson is unavailable as he requires dental treatment after suffering a tooth infection upon returning to Hove but has travelled with the team to continue training ahead of a return next week.
Steve Finn will be rested after suffering inflammation of the knee following his efforts at Derbyshire last week.
Jack Carson, Jofra Archer, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, George Garton and Dan Ibrahim all remain sidelined as they continue their rehabilitation programmes.
Our opponents
Worcestershire began their season with a draw against Leicestershire, though they came within one wicket of victory, in a game which lost nearly a day’s play due to the weather.
Left-arm spinner Josh Baker finished the match with career-best figures of 4-51 from 29 overs. Leicestershire were reduced to 171-9, but with Worcestershire within touching distance of victory, an outstanding last wicket partnership between Hassan Azad and Beuran Hendricks meant the visitors had to settle for a draw.
After coming so close to victory in their first game, our hosts will almost certainly be motivated to ensure they take victory against a Sussex team in good spirits after a captain’s performance from Tom Haines at The Incora County Ground last week.
Salisbury’s comments
“First of all, it is great to have Delray back in the side, we were delighted with his two performances for the second XI, not only with his fifer’s but also his attitude and application. Del comes in for James Coles who has now returned to college to finish his exams.
“We know last week didn’t initially go to plan, having to follow on wasn’t ideal, but I was delighted with the response from everyone involved. We kept fighting and managed to save the draw, now we’ve got to take that spirit and momentum into this game, and hopefully get the win.
“I’m thrilled that we’ve managed to bring in Grant Stewart, he’s a bowler that our coaching team are familiar with. JK and Michael Yardy have both worked with him in the past, they know him well, and he comes highly recommended."
