Sussex vs Somerset

Sussex return to the shoreline to host Somerset in the Rothesay County Championship following a tense finale up at Edgbaston in a match where Paul Farbrace's side were defeated by the barest of margins.

There are close finishes, and then there was Edgbaston on Saturday. In what ended in one of the most dramatic conclusions to a County Championship match in its history, Sussex came away with just three points as Warwickshire crawled over the line in a one-wicket victory.

With the scores tied and Sussex requiring two wickets to complete an unlikely win, Henry Crocombe claimed the wicket of Ethan Bamber to set up a nerve-shredding end in which 13 dot balls ensued before Chris Woakes thrashed his bat at the ball to slam it over the slip cordon and away for four. Victory for Warwickshire, heartbreak for Sussex to commence the final block of County Championship fixtures.

So, on to Somerset: a side with intentions of their own of lifting the Division One title with the county a mere two points off the top of the table, entering tomorrow's clash with Sussex on the back of a convincing eight-wicket win over Essex.

Team News

Joey Evison comes straight into Paul Farbrace's squad, having joined on loan for the remainder of the season ahead of his permanent move to Hove at the end of the season. Jack Leaning is also named in the 14-strong squad, as Fynn Hudson-Prentice misses out through injury.

The Opposition

Somerset returned to red ball action with a routine win over Essex to keep their title charge on the right track. Despite a rocky May - a month that saw them lose consecutive fixtures to Yorkshire and Glamorgan - they have been rather faultless in Division One, earning a big win away at league leaders Nottinghamshire back in June.

Tom Abell has scored the third-most runs in the division with 761 at an average of 76.10. That includes three centuries, too. James Rew and Craig Overton have been impressive with the bat, though the recent win at Chelmsford saw other areas of their XI come to life with Josh Thomas recording his second First Class ton of his career, backed up by a classy 96 from New Zealand overseas star, Henry Nicholls.

As good as Overton has been with the bat, he's been even better with the ball: 33 wickets to his name thus far comes at an average of just 19.54. Captain Lewis Gregory follows shortly behind his colleague, who continues be effective in all areas of his game.
