The Melbourne Stars have today announced that Sussex’s Luke Wright has played his final match for the Big Bash League team.
After being ruled out of the Stars’ next fixture with concussion, Luke discussed his situation with Stars management and the decision was reached for him to end his playing days with the club, as reported on the Stars’ website.
Luke suffered a concussion during the Stars match against the Sydney Sixers on Tuesday.
The glowing piece reflects on Luke’s contribution to the franchise since its inception and his status as ‘fan and team favourite’.
Luke is the most capped player and leading run-scorer in Stars history with 57 appearances and almost 1,500 runs over a seven-season career with the side.
Speaking to the Stars website, Luke commented: “It’s been seven years with the Melbourne Stars, and it’s been a time that I’ve absolutely loved and will cherish.
“I’m enormously proud to have been a foundation member and I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to play for such a long time and amongst so many great players and teammates.”
Stars batting coach, David Hussey, added: “Luke Wright has been a superstar of this club […] He has been a terrific competitor and one of the most genuine players you could share a dressing room with.
“He’s built a lot of friendships within the group and played a significant role in helping build our culture as a club.”
The Stars CEO, Clint Cooper, described Luke as “an amazing player for the Stars and a wonderful, loyal and much-loved servant of our club.”
Luke's next appointment this winter is with Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League. Luke will then turn his attention to the county season ahead. The 32-year-old signed a contract extension with Sussex at the end of last year that will keep him at the club until at least the end of the 2020 season.
