Sussex trail Worcestershire by 322 runs in the first innings, closing the day on 169-5, with Cheteshwar Pujara making an unbeaten 85.
Worcestershire were eventually bowled out by Sussex on day 2 for 491, with Brett D’Oliveira frustrating the visitors, making a brilliant 169 not-out. Three late wickets in the final session of the day put Sussex on the backfoot at the close of play.
Injury-hit Sussex bowled well given the circumstances and could consider themselves unlucky not to have restricted the hosts to a lesser score.
In response, Ali Orr was out first ball before the in-form skipper Tom Haines fell for 26, but the overseas signing Pujara, who scored a double-century on debut, showed plenty of class a resilience to frustrate the home bowling attack as he reached his half-century in 109 balls.
Support for Pujara was hard to come by, and the game swung in favour of the hosts when Joe Leach picked up three wickets in just seven balls. His third wicket came when he bowled the night-watchman Jamie Atkins, who took up the role brilliantly last week against Derbyshire.
As the day came to a close, Delray Rawlins came out to bat and showed brilliant concentration and mental strength to prevent any further wickets from falling.
Sussex will go into day 3 hoping Pujara can continue to bat as long as possible, and Rawlins can continue to show the toughness needed to bring the visitors back into the game.
