In December, Sussex Cricket Foundation invited all the Volunteers and Members who attend Sporting Memories clubs across Sussex to The 1st Central County Ground to enjoy a festive lunch together.
Held in the Long Room, over 50 people attended and it was a joyful afternoon of quizzing and singing providing the perfect end to the year.
They were also joined by Alastair Hignell, who is a patron for Sporting Memories Foundation and helps run both the Brighton and Zoom club in Sussex. A full list of our current clubs can be found on our website.
Are you an older sports fan? Then why not join the new FREE Sporting Memories club opening soon in Hove
Sussex Cricket Foundation, who provides free community-based Sporting Memories Clubs across Sussex that welcome older people that have a passion for sport and want to make friends and connections in their local community, is opening a new club in Hove.
It’s a great opportunity for local people from all backgrounds to not only share their stories but to also partake in a weekly session that ignite old memories through photographs and quizzes as well as getting active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises. And if that isn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee (normally with some biscuits included as well) at half-time.
The club in Hove is looking for both members to come along and enjoy the weekly session as well as local people who have the time and interest to volunteer to help run or support the clubs.
Without volunteers, Sporting Memories clubs across Great Britain wouldn’t be able to run and all volunteers are provided with training and support to help them deliver engaging sessions for members – even for those who aren’t interested in sport!
Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories, is encouraging those who are looking to try something new Hove to visit the new clubs: “Sporting Memories clubs provide a fun set of social and physical activities that allow older sports fans, including those who are more physically or cognitively frail, and all those connected with them, from family members and carers, to have a great time whilst creating relationships and companionship with people with similar interests in their local community.
“We’d really encourage people from the local community to get involved with the club, either as members or volunteers, as they provide a unique opportunity for people to get together and to bond over great sporting moments of the past or present and to take part in some fun, fully inclusive games.”
