Our correspondent reports from the team's second match of the D40 National League Division One season away against Middlesex...
Middlesex won the toss and put Sussex in to bat. The weather conditions were best described as unsettled and although the pitch was covered the slow outfield together with frequent rain interruptions meant this was never going to be a high scoring game. The Sussex batsmen were at a distinct disadvantage having to not only “re start” their innings after each rain interruption but also being unable to pace their innings knowing that some overs may be lost but not how many.
There was only one notable partnership of 54 between Alfie Pyle and James Bunday and Sussex ended at 93 for 9 after 23.5 overs. (Game reduced to 33 Overs a side after 4 rain breaks)
Although not a huge score, with a wet outfield very overcast conditions it was never going to be an easy total. Sussex got the start they wanted and had Middlesx at 14 for 2 off five overs and then 42 for 5 off 10. (Alfie Pyle 3 for 10 off his 6 overs). At this stage the game looked set for a close finish which indeed it turned out to be.
The Sussex bowlers all contributed aided by some excellent fielding and with further wickets falling Middlesex were 85 for 7 needing a further 9 runs but with their tail firmly exposed. It was a nervous watch for both sets of supporters. However, the Sussex total was always looking not quite enough and ultimately the Middlesex batsmen got the winning runs,
It was a very close game of cricket but ultimately the Sussex batting collapse from 87 for 4 to 93 for 9 proved to be the difference between the two sides and Middlesex won by three wickets.
Sussex only had 10 players as a result of a last-minute withdrawal. Defending a low total and pushing an experienced team so close while a man short was a great effort and a testament to the great team spirit of the Sussex players.
The next game is Essex at home (Ansty CC) on Sunday 6 June 2021.
