Chris Jordan contributed to a match-winning partnership in New Zealand’s Super Smash on Sunday as his Northern Districts Knights side won their fourth match in a row and maintained their position at the top of the table. The Knights put the Canterbury Kings in to bat at Hamilton and the visitors made an imposing 190-5, with CJ taking 1-37 from his four overs. At 146-6 and needing 45 from 26 balls, the Knights were in some trouble in reply before CJ and Nick Kelly steered their side home with seven balls to spare. Batting at number eight, CJ made 22 off just ten deliveries, hitting two sixes and a four.
Tymal Mills and Jofra Archer continued to spearhead the Hobart Hurricanes attack in the Big Bash last week. On Monday against Sydney Sixers, Tymal held his nerve against a belligerent Sam Billings in the final over to secure a five-run win for the Hurricanes in Hobart. He took 2-42 and Jofra 0-35 as the home side successfully defended the 170-6 they’d made earlier in the evening. The Hurricanes were involved in another thriller against Brisbane Heat on Wednesday. Defending 179-4, the Hurricanes won by three runs in a match that went to the final ball. Tymal recorded figures of 0-35 from four overs, whilst Jofra took 1-39 from his allocation, his wicket coming via an unbelievable return catch. The victory was Hobart’s fourth in a row and puts them well in contention for a place in the semi-finals.
Elsewhere in the Big Bash, Luke Wright was out of action for the Melbourne Stars last week as a result of a back complaint and Georgia Elwiss didn’t feature for the women’s Melbourne Stars due to an injured finger.
In Australian club cricket, three Sussex players were in action in the New South Wales Premier competition. In the first grade, Ollie Robinson took 2-37 as St George beat Penrith by 67 runs in their two-day match over the weekend. He was run out for nought during St George’s innings of 296 all out on the Saturday.
In the second grade, Abi Sakande was both penetrative and economical in taking 2-34 from ten overs and helping Mosman to an eight wicket win in their one-day fixture against Sydney University on Saturday. Delray Rawlins - who has today been named in the South squad for the North-South Series in Barbados in March – was part of a Sydney side that recorded a 94 run win against Fairfield-Liverpool on Saturday. Delray only made one with the bat as Sydney were dismissed for 280 with three balls of their innings remaining, but bowled nine tidy overs for 34 runs to help them to restrict the home side to 186-9.
In South Australia, Michael Burgess’ Adelaide University side had the week off. They are back in action tomorrow night in the quarter finals of the West End Twenty20 Cup.
