Today marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of the much-loved Sussex all-rounder Umer Rashid.
Born in Southampton, Umer grew up in Middlesex where he eventually began to make a name for himself as a teenager for their county side. He moved to Sussex in 1999 where he spent three seasons, becoming known for his ability to take wickets as a left-hand spinner, but also with his ability with the bat.
In his first match for Sussex, Rashid made his maiden first-class century, scoring 110 away to Glamorgan followed by a half century in the second innings. Later that season, he made 106 and recorded bowling figures of 4-9 from 10 overs at Chester-Le-Street in a match winning performance against Durham.
Umer played 41 first-class matches scoring 1,421 runs and took 49 wickets, alongside his first-class appearances he played 71 List A matches scoring 594 runs and took 73 wickets.
Reflecting on the impact Umer made at the Hove, Sussex Performance Director, Keith Greenfield said: “Umer was a wonderfully warm and relaxed young man, who instantly put those around him at ease.
“His passing was such a tragic loss to everyone at the club, at a time when he was really starting to fulfil his massive potential in the game.
“He will never be forgotten by the Club and all of those who were lucky enough to have known and played with him.”
Once a Shark, always a Shark. RIP Umer Rashid.
