New Sporting Memories clubs launched in Sussex

8 Feb 2023

The Sussex Cricket Foundation is delighted to announce the opening of two new Sporting Memories clubs in Crowborough and Hove.

The newest Hove club launched last Thursday (2 February) at the Central United Reformed Church, with weekly sessions now expected to run every Thursday between 10am to 11:30am. The club in Crowborough will start on Monday 6th March at The Oasis in Crowborough Community Church and will be meeting monthly on the first Monday of each month between 11am – 12:30pm.

Both clubs are free to attend for anyone aged 50+ and are a great opportunity for people to get involved in an enjoyable community session and is ideal for anyone who has a passion for sport or want to make friends and connections in the local area.

They also welcome older people from all backgrounds, with the sessions designed to accommodate those living with dementia, depression or those facing other cognitive or physical challenges and those feeling isolated and alone.

The clubs form part of a social licence partnership between the Sussex Cricket Foundation and Sporting Memories organisation, which provides community-based events across Great Britain with the opportunity to deliver Sporting Memories Clubs in their local area through training, resources and continuous support and development guidance.

The two newest clubs in Sussex are in addition to six brilliant Sporting Memories clubs which the Sussex Cricket Foundation have helped to set-up and run across the county, including clubs in Hove, Brighton, Polegate, Worthing, Crawley with support from Crawley Town Community Foundation and our virtual club available for all those living in Sussex.

Emma Brooke, who leads on the Sporting Memories Clubs operated by Sussex Cricket Foundation spoke about how the partnership is helping to support older people across the county: “It is wonderful to see our network growing in Sussex and to have such great support to achieve this from Sporting Memories.

“The training they provide for volunteers is excellent along with the reminiscence material each week to aid in delivering fun and engaging sessions. Whenever I run sessions or visit our clubs in Sussex it is clear to see how much it means to both members and volunteers; it is hugely rewarding to be a part of.”
