Sussex Cricket was saddened to learn of the death of one of its Vice Presidents, Hugh Thomas last week.
Before his election as Vice President in 2016, Hugh was heavily involved in the administration of cricket across the county - whether that was with Horsham Cricket Club, Brighton Brunswick Cricket Club, the Sussex Association of Cricket Officials or the Sussex Cricket Board.
His wholehearted dedication over some 50 years to the positive development of cricket, especially youth cricket, the development of leagues across Sussex, and umpiring was admired by many people associated with the sport throughout the county.
Hugh served Sussex Cricket as a high-ranking volunteer for nearly 50 years, and the breadth and scope of his activities made him one of the most respected figures in the history of the recreational game in Sussex.
Hugh joined Hurstpierpoint College in 1968, where he taught geography and economics until retiring in 1991. With the gradual change to colts cricket at clubs, Hugh became increasingly involved in the development of a Colts section at Horsham CC, which has yielded long-lasting benefit to Sussex Cricket.
Hugh was also a high quality cricket umpire for many years, at Horsham CC and Brighton Brunswick CC, and his interest in this vital part of the sport led to him becoming a leading administrator in Sussex umpiring circles, assisting with umpire training and mentoring.
Hugh served for a number of years on the Sussex Cricket Board and was Chairman of the Board’s Adult Leagues Group, during a vital period of change that led to the creation of a comprehensive system of league cricket throughout the County. A feature of all of his activities was the outstanding wisdom, judgement and wholehearted dedication that he brought to bear.
Everyone connected with Sussex Cricket would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Hugh following his passing.
