A career-best unbeaten double century from Derbyshire’s Shan Masood gave the hosts the upper-hand on the first day of the LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two match at The Incora County Ground.
The Pakistani opener scored 201 from 271 balls and shared a county third wicket stand against Sussex of 236 with Wayne Madsen who was 88 not out at the close.
With key bowlers missing from the Sussex attack it proved to be a difficult opening day for the visitors, with the hosts closing the day on 327-2. Not for lack of trying, Sussex worked hard throughout the day, but ultimately today belonged to Masood.
Sussex stuck to their task in the morning, as Jamie Atkins and Henry Crocombe dismissed Billy Godleman and Brooke Guest, both caught behind by the debutant Mohammad Rizwan.
However, Masood showed what an accomplished opening batter he is and with the support of Masden, they put on a 100-wicket partnership in 28 overs before tea, with the final session ultimately following the same pattern as the two previous.
Sussex at least applied the brake towards the close of a long hard day in the field but could not end the stubborn partnership of Masood and Madsen.
