Luke Wright shows support for Dynamos Cricket

18 Mar 2020

After witnessing the impact the men’s World Cup had on inspiring his own children, Sussex batsman Luke Wright has thrown his support behind a new ECB programme to get more kids playing cricket.

Dynamos Cricket has been launched to inspire boys and girls aged 8-11 to play cricket and build on the headline-grabbing success of last summer’s men’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand at Lord’s.

Following that win Wright admitted his son, Josh, had immediately wanted to be like heroes of the hour Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes and the new initiative will help ensure their legacy is long lasting.

“Josh is at an age where he is just starting to notice players so in the back garden after the final he wanted to be Jofra and Ben Stokes,” said Wright, who was a part of England’s breakthrough 2010  men’s World T20 champions.

“When I helped England win the T20 World Cup I don’t think we did - I felt it was a missed opportunity.”

There was mixed emotions after the World Cup final in the Wright house, with Luke's New Zealand-born wife and three children having a worldwide view of cricket as Wright has jetted across the world to play in tournaments.

But with England now able to call both their men's and women's teams world champions, Wright knows grabbing the momentum of those successes and giving boys and girls homegrown icons to follow is vital.

“Because of my involvement with Melbourne Stars, some of Josh's favourites are from the Big Bash," he said. "(Australia leg-spinner) Adam Zampa is my youngest son Harry’s Godfather so Josh knows quite a bit about the Australian players!”

Josh Wright is set to join up to 35,000 other girls and boys aged 8-11 around the country who will participate in Dynamos Cricket, which will start in May and focus on fun and developing new skills.

It is a follow-up to the successful All Stars Cricket programme and is set to feature a fast-paced game of countdown cricket in a format that mirrors The Hundred.

Children can join Dynamos Cricket for one of two six to 12-week courses during May or over the school holidays during The Hundred, which starts on July 17.

“Josh loved going to All Stars cricket and this is a continuation from that,” Wright said.

“It was important that we did all we could in cricket to build on the profile of the World Cup win last year."

Every child taking part in Dynamos Cricket will receive a New Balance Dynamos shirt with their name and number on the back.

They will get access to a Dynamos app providing cricket tips, activities and quizzes, alongside skills so that they can practice at home and with their friends as well as receiving packs of Topps Cricket Attax trading cards, featuring some of the best players from The Hundred.

Wright will play for Trent Rockets in The Hundred after he was the last player to be picked in last October’s draft.

“Bearing in mind the players who didn’t get picked up I was just relieved to get in,” he said.

“It’s going to be strange playing against players from your own county although you get those situations all over the world in the various T20 tournaments. A lot of the teams look strong and I guess the team which is best balanced and can get going quickly will do well.

“I’m looking forward to The Hundred. Once the tournament starts and people see the quality of cricket I’m sure it will take off and with games on BBC as well I’m sure that will help get youngsters into it and hopefully create some new heroes in the game.”
