The group stage of this year's Kia Super League has reached it's halfway point. We catch up with how the Sussex players taking part in the Kia Super League have got on in the second week of the tournament. Don't forget the KSL is coming to The 1st Central County Ground on both Tuesday 14th August (Southern Vipers v Surrey Stars double-header with Sussex Sharks v Glamorgan in the Vitality Blast) and Monday 27th August (Finals Day).
The Georgias Adams (12) and Elwiss (19) both chipped in with late runs during the Lightning’s innings of 143-6, with the pair combining to add 30 runs for the fifth wicket. Linsey Smith took the wicket of Alice Monaghan as the Diamonds fell well short of their target. The left-arm seamer finished with 1-26 from her four overs as Yorkshire struggled to 102-9 off their 20 overs. Elwiss bowled two overs for 17 runs.
Linsey Smith took two wickets for just 15 runs in her four overs and Georgia Elwiss bowled one over for ten runs as the Stars were blown away for just 95. Opening the bowling, Smith’s first victim was South African international Lizelle Lee. She returned later in the innings to dismiss Lee’s international teammate Marizanne Kapp. None of Sussex’s trio were required to bat as Loughbourough reached their target for the loss of one wicket and with ten overs to spare!
The Lightning made it five from six with a thrilling win against the Vipers with two balls remaining. Georgia Elwiss impressed with the ball, taking 2-26 from four overs, but Linsey Smith’s four overs went for 41 runs during the Vipers’ innings of 172-6. Elwiss and Georgia Adams made just seven and four respectively as the home team scrambled home.
In the first of four KSL matches in Sussex this year (the Vipers will host the Stars at The 1st Central County Ground next Tuesday before the semi-final and final take place at the same ground on Monday 27th August), Freya Davies’ 1-17 off four overs helped the Storm bowl the Vipers out for just 91 runs. The visitors chased down their target for the loss of one wicket and with 69 balls to spare!
Freya Davies picked up the wicket of Thunder opening batter, Evelyn Jones during her four overs that went for 31 runs. Lancashire’s 153-7 was chased down for the loss of three wickets and with ten balls to spare.
Freya Davies fell victim to an aggressive opening stand from Lauren Winfield and Beth Mooney, conceding 49 runs from her four overs as the Diamonds posted 172-5 in their 20 overs. Despite that imposing total, the Storm once again made light work of the chase to make it four wins in a row and five in total.
Sarah Taylor made four at number three as the Stars made 148-5 batting first. The Thunder just about made it home, hitting the winning runs with one ball to spare.
Neither the Stars nor Sarah Taylor’s best day, as the wicket-keeper made seven from number three during her side’s collapse to 95 all out.
Danni Wyatt was dismissed for five as the Vipers collapsed to 91 all out, a total the Storm chased down inside ten overs.
Danni Wyatt could was caught behind for one off England teammate Katherine Brunt as the Vipers’ fell short of their 176-run target.
Danni Wyatt was back at her best with a 29-ball 36 to get the Vipers off to a flyer. Their 172-6 was not enough, however, as the Lightning scraped home with two balls to spare. Danni bowled one over, conceding just four runs and taking the wicket of Sussex teammate Georgia Adams. Paige Scholfield was back in the Vipers team, scoring one not out from number eight and finishing an over for Arran Brindle who fractured her finger one ball into her third over.
