As 2022 draws to a close, we look back at five standout moments from the year. From record breaking innings to sell-out crowds at The 1st Central County Ground for the England Women, here are some great highlights of the year.
A record-breaking knock from Ali Orr
Where else could we start, other than Ali Orr’s Champagne Moment of the Year as voted by you, the Sussex fans and Members?
Ali hit the highest EVER individual List-A score of any Sussex player in history when he made a spectacular 206 from 161 ball against Somerset at The Cooper Associates County Ground in the Royal London One Day Cup.
Tom Haines and Cheteshwar Pujara at the double
The next stand-out moment came when not one Sussex batter made a double-century, but two. Tom Haines and Cheteshwar Pujara both made match-saving double-centuries against Derbyshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship in April 2022.
After Derbyshire enforced the follow-on, Tom Haines delivered an outstanding captain’s performance, making 243 from 490 balls, with Pujara finishing on an unbeaten 201 from 387 deliveries.
Tom bated just shorts 11 hours as he and Puj shared a stand of 341 in 119 overs.
A sell-out crowd for England Women vs India Women
In September The 1st Central County Ground played host to a thrilling One Day International as England Women took on India Women in front the Sky cameras at Hove.
The match was a sell-out, and the full house were treated to an excellent display of elite cricket from some of the world’s best female cricketers.
The game was the first of a three-match series that India successfully chase down 227 set by England. India captain Smriti Mandhana top scored with 91 from 99 deliveries.
England Women return to The 1st Central County Ground once again next year, as they take on Sri Lanka Women on September 17th 2023 and tickets are on sale already, so don’t miss out!
Sussex D40 Pyle on the runs at The 1st Central County Ground
This year was certainly a year like no other for the Sussex D40 side. Sunday 19th June 2022 was a historic occasion for disability cricket, as The 1st Central County Ground hosted the first ever ECB County Disability League fixture at a first-class venue.
Over 320 people turned out on Father’s Day and were treated to a fantastic display from both Sussex and Surrey.
Not only did Sussex run out winners by 118 runs, but Sussex batsman Alfie Pyle became the first Sussex D40 player to score a century in an ECB League fixture. Alfie reached his century in just 77 balls and was treated to a standing ovation from the crowd.
Brad and Ari arrive at Lords
Lords was the stage for the introduction of two breakout players for Sussex in 2022.
Having played several games for the Sussex 2nd XI, both Brad Currie and Ari Karvelas were called up to the first team as Sussex prepared for a game in the LV= Insurance County Championship against Middlesex at the Home of Cricket.
Both Brad and Ari made an immediate impact, with Brad taking 6 wickets on debut on a day that he will never forget.
Ari also went on to play a vital role the bat, as he made a crucial half-century in the second innings (57) to ensure Sussex left Lords with a draw.
