Sussex Women made it two wins from two on the opening weekend of their Royal London One-Day Championship campaign, with an impressive 209-run victory over Northamptonshire on Bank Holiday Monday.
After Georgia Adams inspired the side to victory over Derbyshire on Sunday, with a run-a-ball century, it was the turn of England star Sarah Taylor to impress with the bat on Monday as Sussex soared to the top of Division Two.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, openers Danni Wyatt and Adams fell for four and 23 respectively, but Chiara Green steadied the ship with a solid 26, and when she was dismissed, World Cup winning duo Taylor and Georgia Elwiss led the charge.
With 46 off 52 balls, Elwiss was in impressive form, but it was Taylor who really shone with the bat. Her brilliant 88 off 78 balls, which included eight fours, put Sussex well in control.
When Taylor's wicket eventually fell, Paige Scholfield arrived at the crease to add another important 42 runs, and Sussex reached another big score and set their opponents the daunting total of 286 to win.
Northamptonshire's chase never got going, with Freya Davies showing the form that earned her 6-10 against Derbyshire by dismissing Amelia Gardner for a duck in the opening over, before an excellent piece of fielding saw the England Academy seamer run out Bethan Soloman for four.
The visitors continued to struggle against the home side's impressive bowling attack, as Elwiss backed up her batting performance with an excellent showing with the ball. The 26-year-old took her first wicket in the 23rd over, trapping Hayley Brown LBW to see the opener dismissed for 19, and quickly combined with England teammate Wyatt to have Alicia Presland caught at point three overs later.
Davies grabbed her second of the day when Tara Norris caught Sophie Bendon for a duck at mid-off, and soon the wickets started to tumble very quickly as Sussex closed in on their second win of the season.
Elwiss clean bowled Ciara Metcalfe, for another 0, to complete excellent figures of 3-13, and then caught Erica Turner to hand Norris her first wicket of the day. Linsey Smith and Wyatt were then left to finish off the innings and complete the emphatic victory, as Sussex took 10 points and maximum bonus points from the match, and go one point clear of Surrey at the top of Division Two.
