Sussex captain Tom Haines scored a magnificent century on his Test debut for the England Lions this week, making 118 from just 138 balls.
That knock against Sri Lanka A took means he has now scored over 3000 first-class runs at the age of 24.
Haines and Jack Carson both made their England Lions debut’s this week against Sri Lanka A and were presented with their caps by two England greats of the game, Ian Bell and Graham Swann.
Here’s what Tom had to say about making his first century for the England Lions:
“It is very special and a very proud moment for me. The thing that I was most pleased with was that it has put us into a really good position in the game.
“We would have liked a few more wickets to end the day, but we’ll have to come back tomorrow and try and get some more.
“I have been to Sri Lanka on two tours previously with the Sussex Academy, probably nine or 10 years ago now.
"The preparation leading up to the games has been great and the practice game last week gave us a good taste of what was to come with what pitches will be like and the weather.”
Tom also highlighted the work he has done with England Lions Batting Coach, Ian Bell:
“I have really enjoyed working with him it has been top drawer. I enjoyed working with him at the Lions camp in Dubai before Christmas.
“He has definitely helped me out with playing spin and just my mental attitude towards it, and how you apply that so that you do it in the game.”
At stumps on day two of the first Test, Sri Lanka A currently trail England Lions by 103 runs in their second innings. Full scorecard available here.
