To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we take a look back at just some of the amazing things the women who represent Sussex have achieved over the past year.
Freya Kemp wins PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year
It was a breakout year for Sussex allrounder Freya Kemp, who made her professional debut for the Southern Vipers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup in May 2022.
Freya took nine wickets, at an average of 17.66, playing in all seven games as the Vipers went on to the lift the trophy.
That led to a call-up to the England Women’s squad and her impact was immediate. She took 2-18 on her IT20 debut against South Africa and then followed it up by becoming the youngest male or female England player to score a half-century in an IT20 game against India.
Unfortunately injury meant that she wouldn’t be able to join Sussex teammates Danni Wyatt and Freya Davies for the T20 World Cup in February, however her efforts were recognised when she picked up the PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year for 2022.
Danni Wyatt and Freya Davies reach the semi-finals of T20 World Cup
Although Freya Kemp was ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to injury, two of Sussex’s own were part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the competition.
England were eventually beaten by South Africa in a close semi-final, but left their mark on the competition when beating Pakistan by 114 runs and posting the highest total in Women’s T20 World Cup history when they reached 213-5.
That total was setup by Sussex and England opener Danni Wyatt who made a sensational 59 from just 33 deliveries.
Record breaker Regina Suddahazai
After making her debut for Sussex Women last summer, Regina Suddahazai didn’t take long before she introduced herself on the international stage too.
Regina, who plays her Club cricket for Roffey and Anstey Women, took the first ever hat-trick in the European Cricket International Women’s T10 competition last month for Italy.
A sell-out crowd for England Women vs India Women
In September The 1st Central County Ground played host to a thrilling One Day International as England Women took on India Women in front the Sky cameras at Hove.
The match was a sell-out, and the full house were treated to an excellent display of elite cricket from some of the world’s best female cricketers.
The game was the first of a three-match series that India successfully chase down 227 set by England. India captain Smriti Mandhana top scored with 91 from 99 deliveries.
