Sussex Cricket is extremely sad to learn of the death of former Disability Cricket captain, Aaron Green. Aaron joined the Sussex County Disability Cricket set up in 2015 and went on to play an instrumental role in the development of the county squad during his time at Sussex.
On arrival, his talent as a batsman was clear and he established himself as an opener. Aaron’s genuine nature and calm demeanour made him a natural choice for the captaincy role, which he took on soon after. His understanding of his players' capabilities on the pitch as well as the bigger picture off the pitch, demonstrated a level of maturity well beyond his years and earned him the respect of players, coaches and officials from across the county disability game. His obvious talent also earned him a place at England’s Regional Centre bringing him one step closer to fulfilling his dream of playing for his country.
Under Aaron’s leadership the Sussex Disability squad progressed from the ECB development competitions to play in the D40 League in 2018. Aaron underwent major surgery for a heart and lung transplant in 2019. Following his rehabilitation, Aaron joined Middlesex, however ill health prevented him from making his debut. Aaron passed away peacefully on Monday 12th July 2021, aged 26, after a long period of illness.
Aaron will be missed by all at Sussex who had the good fortune and pleasure of meeting him. His passion for cricket and his ability to smile through adversity will remain with those who knew him.
Everyone at Sussex Cricket sends its heartfelt condolences to Aaron’s wife, Julie, and to his parents and brother at this most difficult time. The Sussex Disability squad will observe a minute's silence in Aaron’s memory at their fixture against Eastergate CC at the weekend.
Aaron’s family have set up a donations page with all proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Hospital in Aaron's name. To donate, please click here.
