Today marks a special moment in the history of the Sussex Women’s team as it is 20 years since they won their first County Championship title in 2003.
The team were honoured this year on International Women’s Day back in March, when the Club held a special celebration evening at The 1st Central County Ground, where a number of the players attended and were presented with their County Caps.
The title season went right down to the wire, with Sussex taking on Surrey in the final game of the season, needing to better the result of title chasing Nottinghamshire.
Surrey won that game on the Duckwoth-Lewis method; however, Sussex lifted the title by the smallest of margins, finishing half a point ahead of Nottinghamshire.
The side was captained by the now Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the ECB, Clare Connor, as well as Charlotte Burton, who now works for Sussex Cricket as the Women & Girls Cricket Development Officer, and Alexia Walker, the current Head Coach of the Sussex Women’s team.
Speaking on winning the County Championship, Charlotte said: “I can’t believe it has been 20 years since we first won the County Championship!
That week holds lots of special memories for me which I will never forget, especially Camilla’s catch on that first day when we defeated Yorkshire.
“The 2003 season was one of the best moments of my playing career for Sussex and to be part of that team means so much to me.”
