Sussex finished the 2019 season with a win and a loss in the final round of the Vitality Women’s County T20 in Edgbaston on Sunday.
In their second match of the day against eventual champions, Warwickshire, an unbeaten 61-ball 59 from makeshift opener Tara Norris and a superb all-round bowling performance helped the the side romp to a 76-run victory.
After winning the toss and batting, Norris and Georgia Adams put on 68 for the first wicket. The dismissal of Adams and Paige Scholfield threatened to derail the innings, but Ella McCaughan’s run-a-ball 25 from number four helped the side to 134 for 3 from their 20 overs.
The Warwickshire chase never got going with wickets tumbling at regular intervals. Chiara Green was the stand-out performer, finishing with the incredible figures 3 for 6 from her four overs.
Nancy Harman took 3 for 7 from three overs, while there was a wicket each for Linsey Smith, Freya Davies and Norris, as Warwickshire capitulated to 58 all out from 16 overs.
Earlier in the day, Sussex went down to a five-wicket defeat to Lancashire. Norris (20) and Adams (33) once again started the innings in positive fashion, but despite a number of starts, regular wicket meant that the side were restricted to 113 for 6 from their 20 overs.
Sussex gave themselves a chance by reducing the opposition to 11 for 2, but decent middle order partnerships, led by a half-century for captain Eleanor Threlkeld, saw Lancashire home with five wickets and five balls in hand.
Sunday’s results mean Sussex finish sixth place in the division one, to go with their third place in the Royal London Women’s One-Day Championship.
