Sussex's Chris Monk To Score The Hundred Finals Day

Sussex Cricket's 2nd XI scorer, Chris Monk, has been appointed as the scorer for The Hundred Finals Day matches at Lord’s this coming weekend.

Chris learned his trade at Barns Green Cricket Club, near Horsham, where his four children played their cricket. His two daughters represented Sussex at age-group level.

Chris was due to take up the role of 2nd XI Scorer ahead of the 2020 season, but his appointment was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic which prevented any second-team cricket taking place last summer.

He had to wait until 2021 to begin his tenure, and has excelled ever since. Commenting on Chris' appointment, Graham Irwin, the Club's 1st XI, said: "I’ve always enjoyed both offering and receiving advice from Chris on the finer points and enhanced techniques of scoring, and he’s someone I know to be completely dependable, as well as having an excellent relationship with players, coaches and fellow colleagues within the Second XI environment.

His occasional appointments on international match duties are further testament to the regard in which he is held."

Speaking on this wonderful achievement, and to offer some context, Chris said: "I have been a part of the team scoring The Hundred since it's inception. In the past, have just done one fixture a season at Southampton. This year, was chosen for 3 fixtures, including my first time scoring at the Oval, and now, Final's Day. 

They do really try to give us (the team) each opportunities to do the big fixtures, rather than base it all on ability and experience, which is nice. It's a great privilege, of course. Big difference to scoring the Sussex 2nd XI, which I also adore for its informality and closeness to the team (players, coaches and officials), whilst still being highly professional sport. At The Hundred, we're much more isolated from the nitty gritty of the game; no direct contact with on-field umpires, team details sent to us electronically etc etc but still with the responsibility to record every detail of the game culminating in its result!"
