Sussex show huge character in first London Championship win

Sussex recorded their first win in the Women’s London Championship at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy on Thursday with a 15-run victory over a strong Surrey side.

Looking to make amends after a heavy defeat in their opener against Kent on Tuesday, Sussex lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The experienced trio of Izzy Collis (34), Chiara Green (39) and Ellen Burt (23) all played measured innings and anchored important partnerships.

Sussex paced their innings well against a Surrey attack packed full of slow bowling and posted a defendable 178 for 9 from their 50 overs.

Surrey began their reply positively and having reached 82 without loss looked very well-placed. The introduction of the spinners turned the game around, however, with Millie Taylor, Beth Harvey and Emily Spooner taking all ten wickets for 81 runs between them.

Millie Taylor finished with excellent figures of 4 for 18 from 6.5 overs and completed the run out from Sophie Grayson's throw to seal Sussex's victory. 

Making their senior debuts, Izzy Atherton and Grayson both acquitted themselves well. Atherton showed real potential behind the stumps having only taken up wicketkeeping ahead of the 2020 season.
