Squad announced for visit of Durham

23 Jun 2019

Head coach Jason Gillespie has made one change to Sussex's squad ahead of this week's Specsavers County Championship clash against Durham, which starts on Monday at The 1st Central County Ground.

Delray Rawlins replaces Danny Briggs, who has a slight injury concern and has been rested as a precaution.

Mir Hamza is also still out of contention, but the club is hopeful that the Pakistan international will be back fit and available in the next couple of weeks.

After last week's draw against Worcestershire, which saw Ben Brown's side bring 10 points back to the south coast, Sussex will be hoping to claim their first home win of the Specsavers County Championship campaign when they welcome Durham to Hove.

New signing Aaron Thomason will want to build on his impressive debut for the club, which saw him score an excellent 90 at Kidderminster, but he is not the only Sussex batsman in form.

Brown continued to lead by example against Worcestershire with another half-century, and now has the second most runs in the division, while Laurie Evans scored his maiden first-class century for Sussex - and his first in the Specsavers County Championship for four years - in the hard-fought draw.

With the ball, Ollie Robinson once again impressed, taking a five-fer in Worcestershire's first innings and finishing the match with figures of 5-92 from 34 overs.

The 25-year-old now has the second most wickets in the division with 29 - four dismissals behind Derbyshire's Luis Reece, who has played two more matches.

Sussex squad

Ben Brown (c/wk), Will Beer, Danny Briggs, Laurie Evans, Harry Finch, Tom Haines, Chris Jordan, Ollie Robinson, Abi Sakande, Aaron Thomason, Stiaan van Zyl, Luke Wells, David Wiese

The opposition

Durham are currently languishing bottom of Division Two in the Specsavers County Championship, but drew their last match against Northamptonshire with rain washing out the final two days of action.

It was their first draw of the season, after four defeats and a solitary victory against Derbyshire. That 29-run win was secured in stunning fashion, with Durham claiming the final four wickets in just eight balls.

With the bat, our visitors have struggled for consistency, but Alex Lees scored a brilliant 107* in that thriller against Derbyshire and is the side's leading run-scorer so far in this year's competition.

The dangerous Chris Rushworth has been Durham's best with the ball this season, with 27 wickets to his name. Matt Salisbury has also bowled well with 16 wickets in his four appearances this term.

Last time we met

Sussex claimed their first victory of the season in their second match of the campaign with a six-wicket victory at Chester-le-Street in April.

Robinson, who took four wickets, Chris Jordan, who took three, and David Wiese, who took two, all bowled impressively after Durham were put into bat, and the hosts were dismissed for 224.

Luke Wells then led from the front in reply, scoring a vital 98 off 188 balls, and was not out at the end of the innings as Sussex posted 202.

Wiese continued to cause havoc with the ball when Durham returned to the middle, and took a five-fer, finishing with figures of 5-43 to leave his side requiring 212 to win.

Fellow South African Stiaan van Zyl was left to steer the side to victory with his first century of the season. Evans also batted well and scored 51, before Brown scored the winning run to finish unbeaten on one.
