Sussex head coach, Alexia Walker has named a squad of 13 for her side’s first matches of the season in the Vitality Women’s County T20 against Essex at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy on Sunday.
Led by captain Georgia Adams, the squad contains five players who could make their competitive debuts: Indigo Gentry, Daisy Gibb, Sophie Grayson Mary Taylor and Millie Taylor.
Paige Scholfield is unavailable with a back injury, while Sarah Taylor misses out through illness. Sussex’s centrally contracted England players have not been made available for county cricket at this stage.
Ahead of the new campaign, Walker said, “It’s really exciting to be getting out onto the pitch for our first match of the summer. We’ve got a number of young players making their debuts alongside our professionals from the regional set up, which highlights the important role the county game plays in the new domestic structure. It’s always a big moment for a player to make their full, senior debut, so I’d like to congratulate those that do on Sunday.”
“We look forward to welcoming Essex to the home of Sussex Women’s cricket here at BACA. It’s been a few years since we played them, but they’re usually a strong proposition. Above all, it will just be great to be playing a competitive match after a lengthy, enforced absence.”
In the previous county T20 season, played in 2019, Essex finished fifth out of nine teams in divison two, with three wins, two defeats and two abandonments. This year’s competition is played on a regional rather than a divisional basis.
Sunday’s first match begins at 11am and the second at 3pm. Unfortunately, government restrictions mean no spectators will be allowed to attend the fixtures.
