Sharks squad ready for Gloucestershire's visit on Sunday

31 Jul 2021

Sussex Sharks take on Gloucestershire in Group A of the Royal London Cup at The 1st Central County Ground on Sunday (11am start).

Tom Clark is unavailable for the match after sustaining a knee injury, but otherwise the Sharks squad is unchanged from that announced prior to Friday’s no result against Kent Spitfires.

Tom joins Jamie Atkins (right shoulder), Mitch Claydon (right shoulder) and Sean Hunt (back) on the injury list. Jofra Archer continues a managed return from elbow surgery and is not part of the squad for this fixture.

Ollie Robinson has now joined up with the England squad ahead of their Test series with India starting at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

Ravi Bopara, George Garton, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Phil Salt, Delray Rawlins and Luke Wright are all away with their respective teams in The Hundred.

Having played four matches and with four to come, Sussex are seventh in Group A with two points from their two defeats and two no results. The Sharks need a dramatic reversal of fortunes (and weather conditions) if they are to be among the top three sides from each group that will qualify for the knock-out stages of this year’s competition.

With three fifties from three innings, Travis Head is the team’s leading run-scorer in the competition. Archie Lenham tops the Sussex wicket-taking list with five dismissals to his name.

Gloucestershire

Following defeats to Lancashire and Worcestershire in their opening fixtures, Gloucestershire bounced back with an impressive win against a previously unbeaten Durham at Scarborough on Thursday. Having been set a stiff 336 for victory by the nominal home side, Gloucestershire chased down their target with four wickets and two balls to spare.

James Bracey – playing his first game in the tournament - and Ben Charlesworth were the main contributors with the bat for Gloucestershire in that fixture, scoring 90 and 87 respectively. Theirs were the side’s first half-centuries of the competition with Charleworth topping Gloucestershire’s run scorers list with 100 runs from his three innings to date.

Australian overseas Dan Worrall took all four Durham wickets at Scarborough, his first of the competition an enough to put him second behind Josh Shaw in Gloucestershire’s wicket-takers list. Shaw has six wickets to his name, after taking 2 for 57 against Worcestershire and 4 for 36 against Lancashire. Former Sussex man, Tom Smith, has been the Bristolians most economical bowler. The left-arm spinner’s 27.3 overs so far have cost an average of just 4.5 runs each.

Squad: Chris Dent (captain), James Bracey, Graeme van Buuren, Ben Charlesworth, George Hankins, Tom Lace, Ollie Price, George Scott, Josh Shaw, Tom Smith, Jack Taylor, Matt Taylor, Jared Warner, Ben Wells, Dan Worrall,
