Jack Carson & Sean Hunt added to squad for Worcestershire match

5 Aug 2021

Sussex Sharks take on Worcestershire Rapids at New Road in their next Royal London Cup fixture on Friday.

The Sharks have travelled to the midlands with a 14-player squad. Jack Carson and Sean Hunt – the latter returning from a back injury - are in contention for their first appearances of the competition.

David Wiese will miss the match due to a pre-existing commitment made prior to signing for the Royal London Cup.

Jofra Archer (elbow), Jamie Atkins (right shoulder), Tom Clark (knee) and Mitch Claydon (right shoulder) remain unavailable through injury.

Ravi Bopara, George Garton, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Phil Salt, Delray Rawlins and Luke Wright are all away with their respective teams in The Hundred.

Although without a win from their five matches so far, the Sharks can take heart from the way their young side have carried themselves in this year’s competition.

The team nearly pulled off a famous comeback victory in their last match against Gloucestershire on Sunday, to go with a thrilling encounter against an experienced Lancashire side in their opening fixture.

With three games to play, there is plenty for Ian Salisbury's developing side to play for, even if the knock out stages now look out of reach.

Worcestershire

The Rapids began their campaign with three straight wins against Kent Spitfires, Gloucestershire and Essex. Since then, however, they have stumbled, losing at home to Middlesex on Sunday and away at Hampshire on Wednesday. The team are still very much in the hunt for a place in the knock-out stages, and after Wednesday's fixture occupy the third and final qualification spot in Group A.

Twenty-year-old homegrown batsman, Jack Haynes, is Worcestershire' top run-scorer and second overall in the competition with 318 runs from his five innings so far. That included a sensational 153 from 128 balls against Essex. Haynes' opening partner Brett D'Oliveira is fifth overall in the tournament run scorers list with 251 runs from four innings, including his own century against Essex.

The Rapids have bowled well as a unit. Joe Leach and Ed Barnard both have six wickets, D'Oliveira has five and Adam Finch and Josh Baker have four each.

Moeen Ali, Ben Cox, Dillon Pennington and Ross Whitely are all away with The Hundred.

Squad: Jack Haynes, Brett D’Oliveira, Josh Dell, Tom Fell, Jake Libby, Gareth Roderick (w), Ed Barnard, Joe Leach ©, Josh Baker, Charlie Morris, Adam Finch, Jacques Banton, Henry Cullen, Ben Parker
