Chris Jordan available for trip to Northampton

Sussex are back in Specsavers County Championship action on Monday with a trip to Wantage Road to take on Northamptonshire.

There are three changes to the squad that travelled to Durham for Sussex’s previous fixture in the competition last month.

Danny Briggs, Harry Finch and loan-signing Jared Warner come in as Michael Burgess, Delray Rawlins and Ollie Robinson miss out.

Robinson is one of three players currently unavailable through injury. The seamer is recovering from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign. He returned to competitive cricket on Saturday bowling seven overs for Bickley Park in the Kent Premier League (as well as hitting 82 at the top of the order).

On return from his ankle injury, Will Sheffield has experienced back pain which is under investigation. George Garton sustained a side injury in training this week and will be unavailable for a number of weeks.

Sussex – with a win, a loss and 23 points so far -go into next week’s fixture in seventh place in division two, with all sides now having played at least two matches.

Looking ahead to his side’s next appointment, Jason Gillespie said: “After a bit of down time, the boys have been working hard in preparation for the return of the Championship.

“Some have played in the twos, others have taken advantage of a really good block of training, but all the lads are raring to go for this run of four-day matches.

“It’s great to have CJ available for next week’s match after missing a chunk of the Royal London while on England duty.

“With Harry Finch fit again we have had to leave out a batsman and on this occasion that is Michael Burgess. Danny Briggs also returns after being left out for the Durham game. He replaces Delray Rawlins.

“Ollie Robinson’s rehab is progressing well, but he’s not fully match fit yet. He is replaced in the squad by our loan-signing from Yorkshire, Jared Warner.

“Northants are a strong side with all bases covered. They’ve bolstered their stocks even further with a couple of loan signings of their own and we’ll have to make sure we’re at our best.”

Opposition

Northants are one of four sides in division two to have played three matches this term. After high-scoring draws against Glamorgan and Middlesex, David Ripley’s men suffered their first defeat against Lancashire last week. That leaves them in fifth place with 27 points.

Northants have two players in the top six of the division’s leading run-scorers list. Ricardo Vasconcelos is second with 272 runs from his five innings so far, and Rob Keogh is sixth with 241 from his four visits to the crease.

Nathan Buck is the side’s leading bowler, with 11 wickets so far. The loan signings of Jamie Overton from Somerset and Luke Wood from Nottinghamshire has added to their seam arsenal.
