Sussex Cricket are delighted to announce that talented left-arm spinner Alfie Smethurst has signed a one-year rookie contract effective from April 1st, 2027.
Smethurst is a talented young left-arm spin bowler who has come through the pathway and academy, in combination with Sussex Cricket's partnership with Oxfordshire Cricket.
Spending the previous winter in Australia, the 19-year-old then flew over to the UAE to compete in the inaugural U18 World Junior League alongside five other Sussex Cricket representatives. He reached the final, narrowly missing out on lifting the title but did claim 13 wickets in the tournament - the second most out of any bowler.
The spinner was also involved with the Sussex 2nd XI this past season, and featured in the final three matches of the Second Eleven Championship. He bowled superbly: taking 15 wickets across the final three games in what was a strong end to his cricket in England in 2026.
Smethurst has just commenced his studies at Liverpool University, and will be available next summer as a part of Matt Walker's squad.
Commenting on the contract, incoming Head Coach, Matt Walker, said: "I am thrilled that Alfie [Smethurst] has decided to sign a rookie contract with Sussex. I am extremely excited about his potential and it's clear he has a strong commitment to his development.
This signing represents an important step in his progression within the professional game, and we will look forward to supporting him as he continues to develop his skills, gain experience and work towards making an impact for Sussex across the coming seasons."
On signing the contract, Smethurst said: "I'm really pleased to be able to sign my first contract with the club. It's been a dream of mine for a long time, I really appreciate all the support from Sussex and Oxfordshire that I've received and I'm very excited to get started."
Sussex Cricket are delighted he has committed to his first rookie contract with the Club, and all at Hove are thrilled with his development over the last couple of years.
