Sussex Sharks vs Essex

Sussex Sharks take on Essex at Arundel Castle Cricket Club tomorrow (29 July) as they continue their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign.

It has been a disappointing start to the 50 over campaign for the Sharks, who have suffered three straight defeats at the start of the competition. Their narrow defeat at Neath against Glamorgan was followed by defeats against strong Durham and Yorkshire sides.

Bowling first at Hove against Yorkshire, the match was reduced to 48 overs per side after an early rain shower. The visitors made 325/7, largely thanks to a magnificent 117 from Will Luxton and an equally impressive 74 from Sam Whiteman. In reply, Sussex struggled against experienced seamer Ben Coad, who took five wickets, as the hosts were all out for 140.

They will be looking to get their first win on the board at Arundel - where they defeated Kent Spitfires in a dramatic encounter in last year's competition.

Team News

Paul Farbrace has named a 14-player squad which includes County Championship captain Ollie Robinson, who is in line to make his first appearance for the Sharks in the One Day Cup since 2024. 

21-year-old Joe Johnson is also named in the squad and could make his 1st XI debut tomorrow. The young batting all-rounder has featured for the 2nd XI this year.

The Opposition

Essex have won one and lost one of their opening two games in the competition. They were beaten by Middlesex at Radlett last Tuesday, before winning on their return to Chelmsford on Sunday against Derbyshire.

Former England Test cricketer, Tom Westley scored 102 from just 97 balls to help Essex post a score of 257/7. Three wickets each for Charlie Bennett and Mackenzie Jones helped restrict Derbyshire to 248/9, to ensure victory by 9 runs.
