Sussex had the better of their draw with Nottinghamshire in a Second XI three-day friendly at Lady Bay this week.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Nottinghamshire got off to the worst possible start as Abi Sakande bowled Chris Gibson with the first ball of the match.
A devastating spell from Jared Warner – who ended with 3 for 14 from nine overs – plus a wicket each for Sakande, Tom Haines, Aaron Thomason and Elliot Hooper then reduced the home side to 125 for 8.
An 88-run ninth wicket partnership as number three Ben Compton marshalled the tail expertly on his way to 87 gave some respectability to the innings before Luke Wells took the final two wickets as Notts were dismissed for 222.
Contributions from Wells (27), Haines (63), Harry Finch (79), Tom Clark (38) and George Garton (59) gave Sussex a first innings lead with just three wickets lost.
The tail did not fare as well, however, with the scoreboard reading 344 for 9 when Wells declared his side’s innings.
Sussex’s bowlers then did their best to force victory in the limited time remaining, managing to reduce Notts to 183 for 9 when stumps were drawn on day three.
Luke Wells picked up 3 for 25, with Elliot Hooper taking 2 for 24 in 18 very tidy overs. There was one wicket each for Sakande, Garton, Haines and Thomason.
