Sussex duo Wyatt and Taylor help England win IT20 Tri-Series

2 Jul 2018

Sussex duo Danni Wyatt and Sarah Taylor starred for England as they beat New Zealand to win the Vitality IT20 Tri-Series on Sunday.

Wyatt smashed a half-century off 34 balls, while Taylor was in typically impressive form behind the stumps, as England cruised to victory.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, New Zealand started their innings well, but England took three quick wickets, and conceded just 16 runs off five overs, to turn the match on its head.

Taylor, who has been in imperious form with the gloves throughout the series, was excellent at Chelmsford.

In one moment of near genius, Taylor took an outstanding return from Sophie Ecclestone with her back to the stumps, and without turning her head, crashed the stumps with lightning speed. Amelia Kerr survived the run out by the smallest of margins.

Leigh Kasperek was not so lucky, and fell to another piece of Taylor magic when the New Zealander attempted to cut a shorter ball, only to see the Sussex star take a very sharp catch.

Good work in the field, Taylor's talent behind the stumps and impressive bowling saw England eventually restrict New Zealand to just 137, and the hosts reached their target with 17 balls to spare.

Tammy Beaumont began well, but it was then Wyatt who stole the show with her range of power and innovation with the bat. In the sixth over, a no-look ramp shot, an exquisite cover drive and a dab to third man displayed Wyatt's extraordinary variety, and powered England towards victory.

After reaching her 50, Wyatt was out next ball, but the damage was already done on a sweltering day in Essex.

New Zealand offered some resistance, with the exciting Kerr dismissing Taylor and taking two wickets in as many balls, but Nat Sciver and Heather Knight completed the run chase in the penultimate over as England won by seven wickets.
