Sussex club one step from Lord's in National Village Cup

A cricket club from Sussex has made it through to the semi-final of the National Village Cup.

Mayfield CC, who have four sides in the Sussex Cricket League, are now just one win away from the final at Lord’s

They welcome Hampshire side, Liphook & Ripsley CC to their picturesque Wellbrook Ground on Sunday 5th August to decide who will make the trip to the home of cricket.

The winner will play either Folkton & Flixton CC from Yorkshire or Fillongley from Warwickshire in the final on Sunday 16th September.

To make it to the last four is some achievement. More than 300 teams from villages across the British Isles entered this year’s competition. Mayfield’s run began back in April and they have made it through seven rounds to get this far.

The National Village Cup – currently known as The Cricketer Village Cup for sponsorship reasons – has been offering the chance for even the smallest village team to play at one of the most iconic sporting venues in the world since 1972.

Jim Chaplin, Mayfield’s Chairman, had this to say about his club’s achievement: “We are looking forward to welcoming Liphook & Ripsley CC to Mayfield. Having the chance to play for a place at Lords is hugely exciting for everyone connected with our club. We’d really appreciate as much support as possible from across the county!

The club is encouraging everyone to come and support the team in their bid to take a Sussex team to the final. The barbecue will be fired up and the bar will be open throughout the day.

Mayfield CC v Liphook & Ripsley CC at the Wellbrook Ground (TN20 6EA) in the semi-final of The Cricketer Village Club takes place on Sunday 5th August with play starting at 1pm. All are welcome and entry is free.
