Sporting Memories programme resumes at various locations

11 Aug 2021

Sussex Cricket’s Sporting Memories programme has resumed after being paused or forced online during the pandemic.

Weekly meetings of the Hove Sporting Memories Club, held at The 1st Central County Ground, have restarted and are being held between 11am to 12.30pm on Tuesdays.

The Worthing Sporting Memories Club at Worthing FC has also resumed, with weekly meetings on Thursdays from 10am to 11.30am.

A brand-new Brighton Sporting Memories Club has also started meeting at St George’s Church in Kemptown between 10am and 11.30am every Monday.

Sussex Cricket’s Sporting Memories Clubs are open to anyone over the age of 55 who enjoys reminiscing about their experiences of watching or playing sport.

Friendly and welcoming, they offer the chance to get together with like-minded people and share a love of sport.

In addition to the Hove, Worthing and Brighton clubs, the Polegate Sporting Memories Club will also resume its weekly in-person meetings at Polegate Community Centre between 10am and 11.30am from Wednesday 1st September. Until then, the club will continue to alternate between Zoom meetings and outdoor sessions at Hampden Park, Eastbourne.

A brand-new online Sporting Memories Club open to anyone across Sussex or beyond will also launch later this summer. This will take place on Zoom every Friday between 10am and 11am from Friday 10th September.

All sessions are free. If you who would like to attend the sessions, know someone that would like to, or would like more information, please contact Emma Brooke (01273 827104, 07718 492529 or emma.brooke@sussexcricket.co.uk).

Unfortunately, the Bexhill and Crawley Sporting Memories Clubs remain suspended. We plan to re-start the Crawley club over the coming months with the support of Crawley Town Community Foundation but volunteers are desperately needed to restart the Bexhill club.

Steve Breach, a volunteer at the Polegate Sporting Memories Club, explained why he enjoys helping out at sessions: “After a career of more than 40 years in sports journalism, helping to run our Sporting Memories group at Polegate is the perfect fit for me.

“Our meetings are always full of interesting debates and laughs and one positive thing to come out of lockdown has been the fact our members have stuck with us on Zoom during difficult times. That’s really encouraging and rewarding as we must be doing something right!”

Full training is provided by Sporting Memories Foundation with support from Sussex Cricket Foundation. If you would like to get involved, please contact Emma Brooke 01273 827104, 07718 492529 or emma.brooke@sussexcricket.co.uk).
