June is Women's Big Cricket Month!

28 May 2021

Women’s Big Cricket Month is back for a second year! This June brings a nationwide celebration of women’s and girl’s cricket at all levels and Sussex Cricket has loads going on.

Women’s Soft Ball Cricket festivals for both women and girls are taking place throughout the month at clubs around Sussex. These are fun, social events for all ages and abilities and a great way to get into cricket or return to the game.

The girls’ standalone sessions are already fully booked, but there are spaces still available at the women’s events at Burgess Hill CC on Sunday 6th June, St Andrews CC on Sunday 13th June and at Fernhurst CC on Friday 18th June. You can book your place online here, or by contacting lara.johnson@sussexcricket.co.uk.

There’s also a combined Women & Girls Soft Ball Cricket Evening on at Three Bridges CC on Thursday 24th June, the Worthing Area Girls’ Taster Session at The Manor Ground in Worthing on Friday 4th June and the Adur Women’s Taster Session on Saturday 19th June at Buckingham Park. For more details or to get involved, contact charlotte.burton@sussexcricket.co.uk.

The start of Women’s Big Cricket Month brings two fully booked courses for women looking to get into cricket coaching. These take place at the K2 in Crawley on Sunday 30th May and Sunday 6th June and at Chichester Free School on Thursday 3rd June and Friday 4th June.

There’s also an Aldridge Foundation Girls’ Holiday Camp at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy on Friday 4th June. That’s also fully booked, but dates for camps during the summer holidays will be announced during June.

For those wanting to watch cricket during Women’s Big Cricket Month, The 1st Central County Ground is hosting Southern Vipers’ Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy match against Central Sparks on Saturday 5th June. Tickets start at just £1 for children and are available here.

Looking ahead to the an action-packed month, Sussex Cricket’s Women & Girls Development Officer, Charlotte Burton said: “Women’s Big Cricket Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate all that is great about women’s & girls’ cricket in Sussex.

“We now have over 50 clubs with either a women’s and girls section, or both, with more looking to start this summer. We have also seen a huge rise in the last month of women & girls playing cricket, either through All Stars, Dynamos, women’s & girls’ club sessions, Women’s Soft Ball Festivals and sign-ups to community events. The events we have running in June will allow us to engage with even more women and girls and get as many as possible taking up our great game.”

Keep an eye on the Sussex Cricket Foundation social media channels throughout June for all the action from the Women’s Big Cricket Month events mentioned above plus information about sessions being run by cricket clubs throughout the county.

If your club has women’s and girls’ training sessions or matches in June, let us know by tagging Sussex Cricket Foundation’s accounts and using the hashtag #WomensCricketMonth. Clubs can also have their event listed on the England & Wales Cricket Board website. Just submit details here.

If you would like to join a club, there are now over 50 friendly clubs in Sussex with women’s and girls’ section that are always looking for new members. For details of your nearest club, get in touch with charlotte.burton@sussexcricket.co.uk.
