Five wickets for Joe Sarro and an unbeaten 86 from Luke Wright were the standout performances for Sussex 2nd XI as the side recorded an eight-wicket win in their 50-over friendly against Hampshire on Tuesday.
In a match reduced to 36-overs per side, Sussex’s captain Will Beer won the toss and chose to field first at the Ageas Bowl. An impressive six overs from Sarro – a 17-year old from Sussex’s pathway programme – brought the right-arm seamer figures of 5 for 27 as Hampshire were bowled out for 161 in 35 overs.
Beer and Delray Rawlins took two wickets each and there was one for George Garton. Both Beer and Garton were particularly economical, conceding 3 and 3.5 runs per over respectively.
Harrison Ward and Wright added 101 for the first wicket during Sussex’s innings. When Ward was caught for 49, Garton (16) and then Rawlins (8*) combined with Wright to complete a comfortable chase for the visitors.
A four from Rawlins saw Sussex to their target with 14 overs to spare. Wright was left unbeaten having hit seven fours and six sixes in an explosive 53-ball innings that bodes well for the forthcoming Royal London One-Day Cup.
The 2nd XI play Hampshire at The Ageas Bowl again on Wednesday in the opening match of their Second Eleven Trophy campaign.
