Jack Carson takes five wickets in defeat to Essex

Off-spinner, Jack Carson took 5-42 on second team debut as Sussex lost their opening match of the Second Eleven One-Day trophy against Essex by 172 runs.

Continuing their return from knee injuries, Danny Briggs took 3-30 and George Garton bowled five tidy overs as Essex racked up 278-8 from their fifty overs.

Former Sussex man, Ashar Zaidi was the top-scorer in the visitors’ innings, blasting 101 from 64 balls including nine fours and six sixes.

Trialist Tom Milnes was top-scorer with 34 from number seven as Sussex were bowled out for 106.
