Hundred for Tom Haines & five-wickets for Danny Briggs against Essex

19 Apr 2018

There was a hundred for Tom Haines in Sussex’s Second Eleven Championship match against Essex, whilst Nick Oxley made a half-century and Danny Briggs took a five-wicket haul.

The three-day fixture finished on Thursday, with the visitors recording an innings and eight run victory.

Sussex, containing a number of Academy and youth players, were dismissed for 132 in their first innings.

Oxley was the top-scorer making 50 from 72 balls against a strong Essex bowling attack that included the likes of Matt Coles and Matt Dixon.

Briggs, playing as he returns to full fitness following knee surgery over the winter, bowled 36.1 overs in Essex’s only innings. The slow left-armer took 5-109 as the visitors posted 382-9 declared.

George Garton, also recovering from a knee injury, delivered a five-over burst with the new ball.

Sussex’s batsmen enjoyed a better time of things in their second innings, with 19-year-old Haines making 104 at the top of the order.

Captaining the side, Laurie Evans made 43 and Delray Rawlins scored 35 as Sussex were dismissed for 242.
