A 178-run opening partnership between Joe Ludlow and Brandon Gilmour in Sussex’s second innings secured a draw for the side on the final day of the Second XI Championship match against Somerset at Taunton Vale that finished on Friday.
Somerset declared their first innings with a lead of 180 runs in the morning session of day three, before Gilmour (95) and Ludlow (64 not out) saw Sussex to safety.
After Gilmour was dismissed in the 49th over, Academy batsman Tom Clark was lbw first ball to leave Somerset’s Tim Rouse on a hat-trick, but Aneesh Kapil kept him out and three balls later the side’s settled for a draw.
Kapil had made 135 in Sussex’s first innings of 345 for 9 from 104 overs, with Ludlow and Clark making 61 and 49 respectively.
Somerset made Sussex toil during their solitary innings of the match. Nick Oxley picked up 4-135 from 38 overs of his left-arm wrist spin, with Academy leg-spinner Will Collard taking 3-96.
Kapil, George Garton and Abi Sakande chipped in with one wicket each as the home side was bowled out for 525.
