Four wickets each for Tom Haines and Abi Sakande bowled a young Sussex side to a 162-run victory on the final day of their 2nd XI Championship fixture against Essex at Billericay CC.
After winning the toss and batting, Sussex made 338 for seven on day one. Aneesh Kapil – who made a half-century against Lancashire in the team’s last match - scored an unbeaten 110 and shared significant partnerships with George Garton (55) and Tom Haines (41).
Overnight rain seeped under the covers and prevented any play from taking place on day two.
Essex, after establishing that the pitch was playing acceptably, then declared their first innings on 38 for none, to leave themselves a chase of 301 for victory once Sussex had forfeited their second innings.
Sakande and Haines then blew away Essex’s top order, who slumped to 88 for 8. It was then left to Ish Sohi and Eliot Hooper to finish the job as Essex were bundled out for 138.
It was an impressive performance from a Sussex side containing four players from the club’s youth pathway and just three professionals.
