Grant Flower to leave Sussex Cricket

13 Oct 2026

Sussex Cricket Lead Batting Coach, Grant Flower, has informed the club that he will be departing at the end of October to pursue a new opportunity with Surrey County Cricket Club.

Widely recognised as one of the finest Zimbabwean cricketers of all-time, Flower arrived at The County Ground in January 2022, having built a reputation as of one of the world’s leading batting coaches, following spells with the Sri Lankan and Pakistani national teams.

Flower’s near five-year spell at Sussex contributed to a sustained period of success for the club, including the 2024 County Championship Division Two title win, qualification for the 2024 Vitality Blast Finals and successive strong campaigns upon the club’s return to Rothesay County Championship Division One – most recently a third-place finish.

Sussex Cricket Head Coach, Paul Farbrace, said: “It is with sadness that Grant is leaving Sussex Cricket after five years of high-quality coaching, hard work, and dedication to the players at the club.

“Grant is one of the first in everyday and is as dedicated to the role as a coach as anyone I have worked with. We wish him the very best in his new role at Surrey and thank him for the great work he has done at Hove, helping to develop, nurture and improve every player he has worked with. As a person Grant will be missed around the club, for his personality, being a great team man and a great colleague”.

In addition to Flower’s contribution to the club’s recent success within the boundary, Sussex Cricket would also like to thank Grant for the great influence he has had in nurturing the club’s emerging talent, with a number of key members of the current first-team squad enjoying breakthrough seasons under Flower’s stewardship.

Sussex Cricket Lead Batting Coach, Grant Flower, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to be part of Sussex Cricket for the past five years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and will always look back on it with great fondness.

"Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Given the financial challenges currently facing the club, I have made the difficult decision to move on. While it is sad to say goodbye, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have been offered at Surrey and look forward to embracing this exciting new chapter in my coaching career.

"I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the players, coaches and staff who have been part of my journey at Sussex. I have made some wonderful friendships and memories that I will always treasure.

I wish everyone at Sussex continued success, both on and off the field, and look forward to seeing the club go from strength to strength.”
