George Garton continued his sublime batting form with a scintillating century during Sussex & Kent combined 2nd XI’s 147-run win in their one-day friendly against Middlesex at Blackstone Academy Ground sponsored by Hurstpierpoint college on Thursday.
Batting at three, Garton smashed ten fours and six sixes during his 88-ball 117 as Sussex & Kent posted 379 for 8 from their 50 overs. There was also a century for Kent’s academy graduate Jordan Cox, who opened the batting with Luke Wright (29).
Captain, Will Beer was the other significant Sussex contributor to the innings, weighing in with a 14-ball, 30-run cameo at number eight.
Garton’s century is his second three-figure score in one-day cricket in 2019. He made 114 from 83 balls during Sussex’s win over Durham University on tour in Cape Town in March. He also scored a 27-ball half-century in the three-day 2nd XI friendly against Middlesex earlier this week.
In response to Sussex & Kent’s imposing total, Middlesex were bundled out inside 36 overs for 232, with Beer taking three for 32 and Garton two for 38. There was also an excellent run out from Garton to dismiss Tom Davis, who was looking very dangerous with 100 from 77 balls.
